CAPITAL WOMEN TAKE FIRST, MEN SECOND AT PURPLE AND WHITE INVITE

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams opened their 2008-2009 season with impressive showings at their own 2008 Capital Purple and White Invitational on Saturday at the Capital Center.

 

The Crusader women placed first while the men were second in a field of six teams each.  The CU women tallied 219 points and were followed by Ohio Wesleyan with 87 points.  On the men’s side, OWU finished with 151 points while Capital had 129.

 

Capital won nine events on the evening with senior Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) and sophomore Scott Rife (Hilliard, Ohio/Hillard Darby HS) each taking home first place finishes in the long jump and triple jump.  Stanton recorded a long jump of 17’-05.25” and a triple jump of 34’-01.25”.  Rife posted a long jump of 20’-01.00” and a triple jump of 40’-04.25”.

 

The Crusaders also swept top honors in the high jump with sophomore Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) leaping a height of 6’-06.00” and freshman Shantana Thomas (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance HS) recording a mark of 5’-00.25”.

 

Senior Julie Horton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) won the women’s mile run with a time of 6:11.16 and sophomore Ricky Cantrell (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS) took home first place in the men’s 300 meter dash with a time of 37.32.

 

Capital will return to action with another home meet on Saturday, January 10 as it plays host to the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational beginning at 4 p.m. ET at the Capital Center.
