CAPITAL MEN’S SOCCER PAIR DRAWS ALL-REGION PRAISE

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Capital University men’s soccer duo of junior Steven McCarthy and freshman Danny McCarthy earned NSCAA Great Lakes All-Region recognition on Wednesday.  Steven McCarthy was a First Team pick and is eligible for All-America honors while Danny McCarthy was a Third Team All-Region selection.

 

Junior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) was tabbed as the Ohio Athletic Conference Forward of the Year this season after leading the Crusaders with 15 goals and 35 points while also tying for the team lead with five assists.  He led the OAC in points per game (1.84) and goals per game (0.79) with seven of his goals coming against conference opponents.  The 2007 All-America selection and Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association Player of the Year has posted 15 goals in each of his three seasons and is Capital all-time leader in career goals scored (45) and is the first player to reach the century mark in career points (101) with one year of eligibility still remaining.

 

Freshman Danny McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) was named the OAC Midfielder of the Year in 2008 and ranked fourth on the team with 13 points during his first collegiate season including 10 during OAC play.  His five assists tied for the team lead while two of his four goals this season came in a 3-1 win at Heidelberg that clinched the OAC Regular Season Title for the Crusaders.  McCarthy also tallied the game-winner at Baldwin-Wallace and added another goal during a dramatic 4-3 victory over Marietta during the regular season.

 

The Capital men’s soccer team had a total of five players earn All-OAC honors in 2008 which was second only to Ohio Northern, which won the OAC Tournament title to make just its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.  The Crusaders were ranked as high as No. 8 nationally this season en route to its second consecutive OAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-1-1 record in conference play and a 13-5-1 overall mark.
