COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior forward
Daniele Sanna (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) scored a career-high 20 points to lead Capital University's women's basketball team to a 74-60 victory at John Carroll University Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
The Crusaders, winners of four straight, improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in OAC play. The Blue Streaks dropped to 4-4 and 1-2 in conference play.
Sanna scored back-to-back buckets as Capital went on an early 14-5 run to open up a 20-11 lead at the 9:36 mark in the first half. After a John Carroll basket, the Crusaders scored the next 11 points to take control in the frame, leading 31-13 with less than five minutes to go.
Freshman guard Kristyn Heagen (New Concord, Ohio/John Glenn HS) hit another shot right before halftime to push the Capital lead to 41-19, and the Crusaders would lead by as many as 26 points in the second half.
Capital shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) in the first half while holding JCU to just 30.8 percent (8-of-26). For the contest, Capital shot 55.4 percent from the field and forced the Blue Streaks into 22 turnovers.
Sanna led all scorers with her 20 points, while three other Capital starters also scored in double figures. Junior guard Kristen Richardson (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda HS) scored 15, while seniors in forward Caitlin Elsass (Batavia, Ohio/Clermont Northeastern HS) had 13 and guard Heather McAlpin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) added 11.
Capital next takes the court at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, when the Crusaders play Washington (Mo.) University in the Hanover (Ind.) Tournament.
