CRUSADERS REPEAT SUCCESS AGAINST CARNEGIE MELLON, 70-44

HANOVER, Ind.The Capital women’s basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon in non-conference action for the second time this season as it took a 70-44 decision on Saturday at the Elanore Moyer Classic hosted by Hanover College.

 

Capital (6-2) also defeated Carnegie Mellon (2-7) by a score of 52-36 in the season opener for both teams on Nov. 21.  The win for the Crusaders was the 542nd career victory for CU Head Coach Dixie Jeffers, which now holds sole possession of sixth place all-time in Division III coaching victories.

 

A total of 13 different Crusaders tallied a field goal in the game that saw two CU players reach double figures in scoring.  Overall, Capital went 30-for-72 (.417) from the field and held CMU to just 38.3 percent shooting from the field and 0-for-5 from long range.  CU also had a 41-32 lead in rebounding and a 29-14 edge in points off turnovers.

 

Senior Katy Lafferty (Batavia, Ohio/Clermont Northeastern HS) led all players with 11 points while making 3-of-4 shots from three-point range in just 13 minutes of action.

 

Classmate Caitlin Elsass (Batavia, Ohio/Clermont Northeastern HS) followed with 10 points, five rebounds, one block and one steal as the Crusaders improved to 3-2 this season against non-conference opponents.

 

Capital will return to action on Sat., Jan. 3 as they play host to Marietta at 3 p.m. ET.
