CU TRACK & FIELD TEAMS DISPLAY SOLID EFFORT AT CRUSADER INVITATIONAL

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In their second home meet in as many weeks, the Crusader women’s and men’s indoor track & field teams took third and fourth place each at the 2009 Crusader Invitational. The women and men scored 140 and 78 points, respectively.

“Given that it was the second week of practice, I’m really pleased with how the team did,” Capital Head Coach Fred Barends said. “We had kids injured and had to have some substitutions today, but everyone stuck together and did a good job. We had kids set personal bests today and really performed well. The team now just has to keep focusing on the four of five weeks ahead, but I like how we look at this point.”

The Capital men’s sprinters were led by sophomore Ricky Cantrell (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS), who earned second place in 300 Meter Dash with a time of 38.17 seconds.

Classmate Ryan Wolfe (Circleville, Ohio/Circleville HS) earned second in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 53.83 seconds.

“We tweaked my stride a little bit this week, and really focused on my stride,” Wolfe said. “I’m starting to feel better and ready to get some good times.”

The Men’s 500 Meter Run was anchored by sophomore JD Ramage (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS), who ran an OAC ‘A’ Qualifying time of 1:09.02 to finish third.

Sophomore Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hillard Davidson HS) continued his strong start to the season by winning the High Jump with a mark of 6’06.00 inches.

“Cory continues to get stronger every time out. He just missed the NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark that he hit last week, but he still had a very strong outing,” Barends said.

Junior Joel Eversole’s (Waverly, OH/Waverly HS) fourth place finish led the Capital men in the mile with a time of 4:38.68.

Senior Joe Miceli led the Crusader men it the 800 Meter Run with a fourth place finish with a time of 2:04. 36.  Sophomore Emerson Rhoad won his heat of the 800 by running a 2:09.69.

The Crusader men also took second place in the 4x200 Relay with a time 1:34.39.

For the women, freshman Kwesi Seabrook’s (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne HS) was strong in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:01.67 that earned her the victory, as well as hitting the OAC “A” Qualyfing time.  She was also part of the winning 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.  Seabrook tallied a 26.70 split in the in a 4x200 relay that posted an OAC best time of 1:46.18.  She also helped the 4x400 win by over 3 seconds with a personal split of 62.3 seconds in the anchor leg after returning to the track following three years away from competition.

Senior Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) led Capital in the long jump with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying and OAC “A” Qualifying mark of 17’10.25 feet. Stanton also was victorious in the Triple Jump, hitting a 33’10.25, an OAC “A” Qualifying standard.

Junior Jessica Starks (Akron, Ohio/Akron East HS) earned second place in the 60 Meter Dash with an OAC “A” Qualifying time of 8.16 seconds.

The duo of senior Shelly Gaines (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing HS) (2:27.07) and freshman Sarah Trick (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe HS) (2:28.57) earned third and fourth place in the 800 Meter Run. Both earned an OAC “A” Qualifying mark.

“Both girls ran very hard and did a good job of working together,” Barends said.

Corinne Salva (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown HS) took second place in the Pole Vault with a mark of 8’06.00 feet.

In the Weight Throw, Homa Moheimani (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone HS) earned the top spot by throwing 43’04.25 feet.

“Winning an event is always really good, but I’m going to keep looking toward the future and try to get better,” Moheimani said. “I have some more goals to go after and I think I’ll get them. Nothing’s impossible.”

The Crusaders will next race in the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational on Friday evening in Delaware, Ohio.
