Location: Corner of Sheridan Avenue and East Main Street
Incident: According to Capital police, a student was robbed at gunpoint as he was walking back from Kroger. According to police, the student said three white males and a black male in a dark four-door sedan traveling east on Main Street pulled over into a parking lot near the corner of Sheridan Avenue and Main Street in Bexley. The driver asked the student for directions, and when the student approached the car, a black male showed a gun and demanded his money. The student handed over his wallet, and the car drove off. The student was not injured. The car was last seen heading south on Sheridan Avenue past Livingston Avenue. According to police, the car is a dark, four-door sedan. The first two letters of its license plate are E K.
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2009, 2:30 a.m.
Location: Capital University Apartments, 2130 Astor Ave.
Incident: According to Capital University Police Department, at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, a Capital University apartments resident reported she had been raped in her room early that morning by a former boyfriend. She did not seek medical treatment. Charges have not yet been filed. Police continue to investigate, and the report has been shared with the Office of Student Rights and Standards.
Sometime between 9 p.m. June 4 and 6:45 p.m. June 5, 2009
Location: 853 Sheridan Ave.
Incident: According to Bexley Police, a resident at 853 Sheidan Ave. reported someone entered his house and removed property valued at $750. No one was home at the time, and no one was injured. Police are investigating.
Monday, May 11, 2009, between 6 and 8:30 p.m.
Location: 872 College Ave.
Incident: According to Bexley Police, sometime between 6 and 8:30 p.m., someone entered an unlocked home at 872 College Ave. and removed property valued at nearly $3,700. No one was home at the time, and no one was injured. Police are investigating.
Saturday, March 14, 2009, 10:35 a.m.
Location: The Capital Center, Mound Street and Pleasant Ridge Avenue
Incident: A Capital police officer was dispatched to The Capital Center on a reported theft. According to Capital police, a caller reported seeing a male in his early 20s wearing blue jeans, a red shirt and red jacket place a something resembling a projector under his jacket. When the caller confronted the suspect, he ran toward a nearby parking lot. Police located an individual fitting the description hiding under a vehicle on Francis Avenue and recovered a black stereo tuner wrapped in black sweatpants. According to police, the caller identified the suspect and said the stereo tuner as belonged to Capital University. Police arrested Charles Marchay Bryant, 18, of Mayfield Drive, in Bexley, on charges of theft and criminal trespassing.
Wednesday, March 11, 2009, 6:16 a.m.
Location: College Avenue Residence Hall, first floor
Incident: Campus Police responded to College Avenue Residence Hall on a call from a female Capital student who woke up to find a white male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt standing halfway inside the window of her first-floor room. The male ran once he had been spotted, and the student called campus police. Police chased a person fitting that description to Frances Avenue, but lost him behind some houses. Police noted the student’s window had been opened slightly and that the suspect had removed the screen. No one was injured. The investigation continues.
Monday, March 2, 2009, 1 p.m.
Location: Trinity Lutheran Seminary parking lot, College Avenue and Mound Street
Incident: It was discovered that two cars had been broken into, and property had been stolen from them. The investigation continues.
Update: (Wednesday, March 4, 2009) A third car parked in a lot adjacent to The Rusty Bucket Corner Tavern on East Main Street was broken into recently, and police continue to investigate the series of break-ins. Damages include broken windows, stolen radios, stolen paperwork and torn dashboards. Here are some ways you can protect yourself:
- Remove all valuables from your car.
- Visit your car frequently. Don’t let it sit in the same spot for long periods of time.
- Remove personal paperwork (things with your name, address, phone nyumber and other personal information).
- Lock your doors.
Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, 2:40 a.m.
Location: Speedway Gas Station, 2240 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus
Incident: Bexley Police responded to a report of a woman screaming and reportedly found an unclothed woman and a man hiding in the bushes behind the Speedway Gas Station, located at 2240 E. Livingston Ave., in Bexley. According to Bexley Police, the woman had been beaten. She was taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment. Police arrested 46-year-old Clay L. Kermit, of Columbus, on charges of felonious assault and attempted rape. Neither individual is affiliated with Capital University.
Saturday, Feb. 8, 2009, 3 a.m.
Location: Exxon Gas Station, 2097 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus
Incident: A Capital University student’s purse, cash and residence hall key were stolen. Two women are suspected of the theft. Columbus Police are investigating.

Location: Battelle Hall, Capital University
Incident: Capital University Public Safety Officers are investigating the assault of a university employee that occurred this afternoon in the second floor hallway of Battelle Hall.
The suspect approached the employee asking for directions to the cafeteria and then to Renner Hall. The suspect then struck the employee and fled the scene. Public Safety officers responded within minutes of receiving the call and locked all residence halls and campus buildings north of Mound Street as they cleared them room-by-room. The employee was taken to the hospital.
The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20s wearing a light colored sweatshirt with a dark gray pattern and tight-fitting dark-colored hat and dark pants.
The campus remains on a heightened level of security, and students and employees are advised to exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. If you see someone matching this description, do not approach the individual, and please notify Public Safety at 236-6666.
Update on 10-17-08 Campus Crime Alert
The Clay County (Indiana) Sheriff’s Office has arrested 20-year-old Justin Young, of Wichita, Kan., on a charge of possession of stolen property in connection with the stolen car of a Capital University employee. The Bexley Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for Young on a charge of aggravated robbery in connection with the assault of the employee and theft of her car from the parking garage near Battelle Hall Friday afternoon. Young is being held in the Clay County Justice Center. Extradition proceedings to bring him back to Ohio are expected to begin soon. (Posted on Oct. 20, 2008.)
