MARIETTA, Ohio – Visiting Capital opened the game on a 22-2 run and never looked back as the Crusaders defeated Marietta, 60-22 in Ohio Athletic Conference basketball action on Wednesday night.
With the win, Capital (14-4, 11-2 OAC) maintained its one-game lead in the OAC standings while Marietta (2-18, 0-13 OAC) lost its 16th consecutive game.
Senior Heather McAlpin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) led all players with 16 points on the night. She finished just two points shy of her career high after hitting 7-of-11 shots from the field. The point guard added team highs of nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks to go along with two steals.
Classmate Daniele Sanna (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) made 7-of-10 shots from the field to finish with 14 points. She also had five rebounds and two assists while adding a team-best three steals.
No other Crusader player finished with more than six points, but the duo of senior Caitlin Elsass (Batavia, Ohio/Cleremont Northeastern HS) and freshman Shalena Hawkins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown HS) pulled down eight rebounds each.
Overall, Capital held a 47-34 lead in rebounding and turned 14 steals into a 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers. CU outscored MC 28-7 in the first half and held the Pioneers to just 10-for-49 shooting on a night that saw no made three-point shots made by either team. Capital finished 0-for-8 from beyond the arc while Marietta was 0-for-15 from long range.
The homestanding Pioneers were led by a 10-point, 10-rebound effort from Jamie Beckett, but it was not enough to overcome a Crusader squad that led by as many as 40 on several occasions.
Capital returns home to play host to Muskingum on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Crusaders will be sponsoring their annual ‘Take a Kid to a Game Day’ which allows up to four children to receive FREE admission when accompanied by a single paid adult.
