CU TRACK & FIELD RECORDS HISTORIC DAY AT 2009 ALL-OHIO INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

WOMEN'S RESULTS | MEN'S RESULTS

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University women’s and men’s indoor track & field squads had one of the best overall single days in program history on Saturday at the 2009 All-Ohio Championships hosted by Otterbein College.

The Crusader women placed third to take home the first ever team trophy at the All-Ohio Championships while the CU men were ninth out of 20 teams in each gender on a day that featured three school records and five first place finishes.

“This is what track and field is all about,” CU Head Coach Fred Barends said.  “These athletes work hard every day and today they stepped up to perform on a big stage.  Now I hope that they can take this as a starting point to build upon over the next few weeks.”

Sophomore Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) broke the Capital and All-Ohio meet records in the men’s high jump after clearing the bar at 6-08.00’.  His winning mark is the best in the OAC this season and ninth best in NCAA Division III according to RaceberryJam.com.

On the women’s side, classmate Emily Goerig (Letonia, Ohio/Letonia HS) won the shot put with a school record toss of 42-01.25’.  Her throw is the best in the OAC this season and is an OAC automatic qualifying standard while coming just three inches shy of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Kwesi Seabrook (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne HS) improved upon her Crusader school record with a time of 1:00.51 in the 400 meter dash to place third individually.

In addition to these record performances, senior Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) won two events on the day.  She tallied a jump of 17-08.75’ in the long jump and 35-02.00’ in the triple jump to help the CU women finish nearly 20 points ahead of their projected finish according to pre-meet seeding.

The final Capital victor on the day was senior Doug Gibbons (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) who won the men’s pole vault at a height of 14-11.00’.

Junior Jessica Starks (Akron, Ohio/Akron East HS) and freshman Sarah Trick (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe HS) had their best performances of the season respectively in the women’s  55 meter dash and 800 meter run.  Starks was third in the 55 meter dash at 7.37 while Trick was also third in the 800 meter run at a time of 2:23.43.  Fellow junior Brittany Carter (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South HS) was just behind Starks in the 55 meters in fifth place at 7.58.

Junior Homa Mohemani (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone HS) was fourth in the weight throw while sophomore Mallory Molls (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick HS) placed eighth in the pole vault to round out a group of solid performers in the women’s field events for Capital.  Mohemani had a toss of 46-03.25’ while Molls cleared the bar at 9-10.00’.

The Crusader women’s relays had great efforts of their own as the 4x200 meter relay was second in a time of 1:45.92 while the 4x400 relay was third at 4:09.60.

Each of the Capital men’s relay squads placed seventh with the 4x200 team posting a time of 1:33.28 and the 4x400 relay coming in at 3:29.74.

Capital will be back in action on Friday at its own Rick Meindl Last Call Meet which begins at the Capital Center at 5 p.m.
