COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a meet that featured 576 entries, the Capital University women’s and men’s track & field squads made a splash as four school records fell at the 2009 Rick Meindl Last Call on Friday at the Capital Center.
Overall, the CU women were second out of 12 teams while the men placed sixth in a field of 12 teams.
The highlight of the night for Capital was the women’s 4x200 meter relay squad that broke an Ohio NCAA Division III Collegiate record with a time of 1:43.88. The team of Brittany Carter (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South HS), Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS), Kwesi Seabrook (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne HS) and Jessica Starks (Akron, Ohio/Akron East HS) surpassed the 2001 mark set by Denison by over 1.10 seconds. The group broke the Capital Center record by 1.34 seconds and the previous school record by 1.62 seconds. The group’s previous best this season was a 1:45.92.
“Their performance tonight was amazing,” CU Head Coach Fred Barends said. “Each of our runners in the relay improved upon their split times and had one of the best races I have seen in a long time. Their finish really propelled our team to great performances throughout the night.”
In addition, two other Capital University sprint records were smashed on Friday night. Starks tallied a third place finish while recording an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.73 in the 60 meter dash. Her mark is the third fastest run by an NCAA Division III competitor in a 60 meter dash nationwide this season according to www.raceberryjam.com.
Also, Seabrook continued to improve upon her CU record in the 400 meter dash with a winning mark of 58.94. Her first sub-60 second performance as a collegiate also gave her a Capital Center record by 0.43 seconds. The mark is also the best by an OAC competitor this season.
Senior Homa Mohemani (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone HS) placed fifth in the weight throw while launching a school-record distance of 47-03.50’. She surpassed her own previous CU record by 3.75 inches in a competition that was won with a Capital Center record throw of 54-07.50’ by Bahiyjaui Allen of Ohio University.
Three other Crusader individuals won their respective events as Stanton tallied a distance of 17-08.00’ in the long jump, sophomore Mallory Molls (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick HS) cleared the bar at 10-06.00’ in the pole vault and Carter had a time of 42.91 in the 300 meter dash. Carter’s time was especially impressive as she improved upon her season best by 2.21 seconds.
In addition, the duo of freshman Hannah Childs (Grandview Heights, Ohio/Grandview Heights HS) and senior Julie Horton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) each placed second in the 1,000 and 3,000 meter runs respectively. Childs had a time of 3:53.74 while Horton ran a 12:00.90.
Freshman Karen Steiger (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch HS) was second in the 60 meter hurdles at 10.19 seconds while sophomore Emily Goerig (Letonia, Ohio/Letonia HS) placed third in the shot put with a toss of 41-00.50’.
On the men’s side, the 4x200 meter relay team led the way with a winning time of 1:33.71to beat out is competition by 2.13 seconds.
Sophomores Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) and Ricky Cantrell (Englewood, Ohio/Englewood HS) each recorded second place finishes on the evening. Trump cleared the bar at 6-04.25 in the high jump while Cantrell recorded a time of 37.30 in the 300 meter dash.
Senior Doug Gibbons (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) placed third in the pole vault at 14-00.00’ while sophomore Emerson Rhoad (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville HS) finished fourth overall but first amongst NCAA Division III competitors with a time of 9:32.51.
Capital will have the luxury of hosting the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 6 & 7 at the Capital Center Fieldhouse.
