ENROLLMENT: Depending on your area of interest, sign up for an internship under one of the following course numbers:
* COMM 495 (Communication/Organizational Communication Internship)
* PR 495 (Public Relations Internship)
* RTVF 495 (Radio-Television-Film Internship)
* TH 495 (Theatre Studies Internship).
You can earn between zero to 12 credit hours for your internship work. Dr. Croft will help you determine how many internship hours that you should enroll for. Generally speaking, the following ratio applies:
* 3 hours a week (or 45 hours a semester) equal 1 credit hour;
* 9 hours a week (or 135 hours a semester) equal 3 credit hours;
* 18 hours a week (or 270 hours a semester) equals 6 credit hours; and
* 36 hours a week (or 540 hours a semester) equals 12 credit hours.
Also, if you’re interested and qualified, you can do more than one internship. Please note, though, that you cannot earn more than 12 internship hours within the Department of Communication.

INTERNSHIP CONTACT SHEET: You must complete the Intern Contact Sheet and return it to Dr. Croft before the end of the first full week of classes. (You can print and fill out the on-line form or pick one up from Dr. Croft.) If you’d like, you can complete the Intern Contact Sheet prior to getting internship approval if you intend on taking an internship for credit in approaching semester.
REQUIREMENTS:
A. You are responsible for meeting requirements without reminders. Stay informed.
Failure to meet requirements may result in a failing grade for the course.
B. Internships must be approved by your advisor and Dr. Croft.
C. You are responsible for obtaining an approved internship by the end of the first full week of classes.
To approve the internship, Dr. Croft will need you to provide her with confirmation of your internship.
Ask your On-Site Internship Supervisor to write you a
confirmation letter on company letterhead that includes the following information:
1. Confirmation of employment
2. Job description
3. Confirmation of minimum number of hours to be worked during the semester Your On-Site Internship Supervisor can fax the confirmation letter to Dr. Croft at (614) 236-6169
or mail it to the following address:
Dr. Sharon Croft, Acting Internship Coordinator, Dept. of Communication, Huber-Spielman Hall,
1 College and Main, Capital University, Columbus, OH 43209.
D. You must attend periodic, mandatory meetings with Dr. Croft
during the semester. Typically, these meeting will be scheduled on a Friday at 10am in H/SP 127.
E. Do your best work at your internship.
F. You need to keep a weekly log, and you’ll turn it in--with your 3-page paper-- on the Monday of the week
that you do your presentation.
G. You also need to turn in a 3-page, typed, double-spaced paper in which you relate
your internship experience with your previous and current course work.
In your paper, include a cover sheet with your name, the name of your company, and the dates of your
internship. (The cover sheet does not count as part of your 3 pages.)
In the paper, discuss the following three areas:
(1) what you feel that you gained from the experience,
(2) the most important elements of that experience, and
(3) suggestions about possible ways to improve the internship experience for future students.
Turn in your paper with your weekly log.
H. Finally, you will make a 10-minute presentation to the faculty of the Department of Communication
in which you summarize the activities that you undertook as an intern.
(For specifics about the structure of the presentation, please review the on-line guidelines.)
You’ll give this presentation one, two, or three weeks before the end of the semester. For Fall 2008, the
date, time, and place has yet to be announced.
l. Evaluations: Twice during the semester and once at the end of the semester, we will ask
your On-site Internship Supervisor to use the Internship Evaluation Criteria Sheet to evaluate your
performance. We will use these evaluations when awarding your grade upon completion of the internship.
It is your responsibility to ask/remind your On-Site Internship Supervisor to fill in evaluation forms.
