COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women’s and men’s track & field squads closed out the team portion of their indoor seasons with fifth and eighth place finishes respectively at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday.
The Crusader women tallied 84 team points to place fifth just behind Baldwin-Wallace (92.50) and Marietta (91). The Capital men finished with 28 points, which was only four shy of seventh-place John Carroll. Ohio Northern won both the women’s and men’s team titles.
Five Crusaders finished the day as OAC Indoor Champions including double winners Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) and Kwesi Seabrook (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne HS).
Both runners combined to help the Capital women record a tremendous victory in the 4x200 meter relay. The squad had a sizeable lead throughout the race until the baton was dropped on the exchange from the third to final leg. After the anchor runners from Otterbein and Marietta had past Capital and the rest of the field had caught up, Jessica Starks (Akron, Ohio/Akron East HS) surged past the entire field in less than 60 meters to lead the Crusaders to a victory by 0.33 seconds in a time of 1:47.39.
Stanton won the triple jump with a school record distance of 37-01.00’ which was 15 inches better than the next closest competitor.
Seabrook shined in her first OAC Indoor Championship meet with a school and facility record time of 58.57, which provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships scheduled for next weekend at Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Capital women also benefited from championship performances from sophomore Emily Goerig (Letonia, Ohio/Letonia HS) in the shot put (42-03.50’) as well as second and third place finishes respectively by Starks in the 300 meter (41.69) and 55 meter (7.31) dashes.
Sophomore Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) caught the attention of an overflow crowd at the Capital Center fieldhouse as he won the men’s high jump after clearing the bar at a school and facility record 6-08.25’, which is also one of the Top 10 marks in the nation and will assure him a spot at Nationals next weekend.
The duo of Sarah Trick (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe HS) and Joe Miceli (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic HS) went second and third respectively in the women’s and men’s 800 meter runs to round out the top performers for the Crusaders.
