TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sophomore
Cory Trump (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) tallied the best finish by a Capital University field event athlete at the NCAA Championships in over 30 years as he placed fourth in the high jump on Saturday.
Trump cleared the bar at 6-8.75', which bests his previous school record of 6-8.00' set one month ago on Feb. 14, 2009 at the All-Ohio Indoor Championships. With the finish, Trump becomes the 16th All-American in Capital Track & Field history and the first in a field event since Rick Meindl was third in the shot put and fifth in the discus at the 1978 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The sophomore opened by jumping a height of 6-4.75' on his second attempt. He then missed on his first two attempts at 6-6.75' before clearing the bar on his final try. Trump then set the school record on his second jump at 6-8.75'. He made three tries at 6-9.75', but just missed on his last two jumps and placed fourth after entering the competition at the sixth seeded jumper in the nation.
The Capital University track & field teams will head outdoors beginning next weekend as they take part in the Roanoke Relays on Friday and Saturday.
