Game Two Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital settled for a split in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday in opening day of play this season at Clowson Field. The Crusaders won 2-0 in the first game before falling 11-6 in the finale to take their record to 10-6 on the season.
In the opener, Capital used an RBI double off the bat of junior Brittany Stefano (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown Lake HS) and a RBI single from senior Kaleen Keitch (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) in the fourth inning to support its solid defense and strong pitching. Stefano tallied 10 strikeouts while surrendering just four hits and one walk to earn her third complete-game shutout of the season.
The Crusaders could not carry the momentum into game two as Transylvania had a one-out homer in the first inning and two more runs in the second to build a 3-0 advantage. CU came back with three unearned runs in the bottom of the second on the strength of a two-out double to center field by junior Rebekah Peters (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) to even the score. Capital then took the lead in the fourth when sophomore Sarah Finkel (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS) and freshman Stephanie Peterson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) each picked up an RBI with a double and single respectively as CU took a 5-3 lead.
Each side would trade runs in the fifth inning before Transylvania would score four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take control of the game and roll to an 11-6 victory.
Sophomore Ashley Daugherty (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Pickerington Central HS) was 3-for-4 in the second game while freshman Christa Alvich (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with two runs scored for the Crusaders.
Capital will remain at home to host Thomas More in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET
