Game Two Box Score WILMINGTON, Ohio - After a 48-hour delay due to rain, Capital swept both ends of a Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Wilmington on Monday by scores of 6-1 and 7-3. With the wins, CU improved to 12-6 overall and 2-0 in OAC action.
Capital was led offensively by the duo of freshman Stephanie Peterson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) and sophomore Sarah Finkel (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS) who each picked up four hits on the afternoon. Peterson finished 4-for-8 with a double, sacrifice bunt, run scored and four RBI while Finkel combined to go 4-for-6 with a triple, walk, sacrifice bunt, two stolen bases, three runs scored and one driven in during the twinbill.
The trio of sophomore Jen Reimer (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood HS) as well as juniors Liz Dumas (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial HS) and Brittany Stefano (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown Lake HS) added three base hits each while sophomore Ashley Daugherty (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Pickerington Central HS) smacked her first home run of the season for the Crusaders which out hit the Quakers, 23-14 on the day overall.
Stefano was impressive in the circle as well with two complete game victories and she lifted her individual record to 11-3 on the season. She tallied 14 strikeouts in 14.0 innings pitched with only one walk while surrendering just four runs overall.
The two sides traded runs in the first inning of the opening game before Capital took control with two more scores in the fourth. Peterson ripped a one-out double to right centerfield to send home Christa Alvich (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) from second base. Then Rebekah Peters (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) followed with a RBI on an infield single for a 3-1 Crusader advantage.
Capital added two more in the fifth on an RBI triple from Finkel and a RBI base hit by Peterson and put the game away in the sixth with an RBI single from Kaleen Keitch (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) for a 6-1 victory.
In the second game, Wilmington scored again in the first inning but Capital answered with three runs of its own in the top of the second. After a leadoff single by Reimer, Stefano laced an RBI double to left field. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third base, Finkel walked to put runners at the corners with one out. Peterson then lifted a two-RBI single into right centerfield for a 3-1 CU advantage.
The Quakers got one back in the third, but Peterson responded with a leadoff homer over the left field wall in the fifth inning for a 4-2 Crusader lead.
WC scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but Daugherty cleared the bases with a two-out three-RBI double in the sixth to give Capital a 7-3 victory and a sweep of the day's action.
Capital returns home to play host to Muskingum in another OAC doubleheader on Wednesday at Clowson Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
