GAME TWO BOX SCORE CINCINNATI, Ohio - Visiting Capital started a busy three days of softball on a high note with a non-conference sweep of Mount St. Joseph on Thursday. CU won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings before taking the finale, 8-2.
Capital (18-10), winners of six straight games, will now take part in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheaders over the next two days. On Friday, CU will attempt to break a three-way tie for third place in the OAC standings as it travels to John Carroll for a 3:30 p.m. start. The Crusaders will then return home to play host to #12 Ohio Northern for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the first game, junior Brittany Stefano (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown Lake HS) continued her strong play in the circle for the Crusaders. The reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week allowed just one unearned run on eight hits while striking out seven in a complete-game efforts as she improved to 16-5 on the season.
With the scored tied at 1-1 heading into extra innings, Capital started its offense right away. Leadoff batter Stephanie Peterson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) moved courtesy runner Sarah Finkel (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS). Freshman Christa Alvich (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) took advantage as she lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to send home Finkel from third. Stefano then retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve a 2-1 victory.
In the second game, Capital continued its offense with four runs in the top of the first inning. Alvich, Ashley Daugherty (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Pickerington Central HS), Kaleen Keitch (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North HS) and Kacee Boham (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North HS) each drove in a run during the rally that broke the game open for Capital in an 8-2 victory.
Freshman Holly Wood (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville HS) earned her first collegiate victory with a complete-game three-strikeout effort. She surrendered only one earned run on 11 hits to lift her record to 1-3 on the year.
