SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH MARIETTA IN OAC ACTION

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital split the final home softball doubleheader of the season on Thursday with Marietta at Clowson Field.  The Crusaders took the opener, 3-2 before falling in the nightcap, 6-2.

Homestanding Capital (19-15, 7-9 OAC) was eliminated from contention for the OAC Tournament while Marietta moved to 22-12 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

In the opener, the Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-out two-run homer by sophomore Ashley Daugherty (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Pickerington Central HS)

After Marietta evened the score with a two-run blast of their own in the fourth inning, Capital scored the game-deciding run in the bottom of the fifth.  Sophomore Sarah Finkel (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS) singled to start the inning.  Finkel was then running on the play as freshman Stephanie Peterson (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) singled to left field.  The Pioneer outfield misplayed the ball and Finkel scored all the way from first for a 3-2 Crusader victory.

Junior Brittany Stefano (Uniontown, Ohio/Uniontown Lake HS) earned a complete-game victory after striking out three and not surrendering a walk.  She gave up just two runs on seven hits to earn her 17th victory of the season.

Capital got out to another lead in the finale as freshman Christa Alvich (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) ripped a one-out two-RBI double in the third to plate Finkel and fellow freshman Jessica Stoltz (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS).

Unfortunately, Marietta would come back with three runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth as Capital found no more offense in a 6-2 loss to the Pioneers.

Capital will conclude the 2009 season on Saturday as it travels to Otterbein for an OAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
