AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - A pair of Capital University men's track & field student-athletes were named to the OAC All-Academic Team on Friday following a vote conducted amongst the conference's faculty athletics representatives. Senior
Doug Gibbons was an OAC All-Academic selection while
Marty Assmann was an Honorable Mention pick.
Gibbons has been a OAC All-Academic Team member in each of the past two seasons while Assmann has been previously selected as an OAC All-Academic Team selection in both 2007 and 2008 in football. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 gpa, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least his second year of participation in the sport.
Gibbons (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) was also Capital's 2009 male recipient of the Clyde Lamb award given annually to the Best male and female student-athletes at each OAC institution. The recent graduate of Capital with a degree in Art History and Theatre broke his own school record in the pole vault on Thursday at a height of 15-09.75'. The jump is the 12th best in the nation this season and will send him to the NCAA Championships next weekend at Marietta College. Gibbons placed third in the 2009 OAC Outdoor Championships and fourth in the OAC Indoor Championships.
Assmann (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley HS) has a season-best throw of 181-04' in the javelin this spring for the Crusaders. He placed fifth in the 2009 OAC Outdoor Championship meet as is one of just five throwers in the OAC this season to break the 180-foot barrier. The junior holds a 3.80 cumulative GPA as an education major.
