AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Three members of the Capital University baseball team were recognized on the Ohio Athletic Conference All-Academic Team on Wednesday following voting by the OAC's faculty athletics representatives. Juniors
Justin Stegman and
Matt Uy were First Team picks while sophomore
Steven Veenstra was an Honorable Mention selection.
To be eligible for the OAC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least his second year of participation in the sport.
Stegman, a pitcher out of Wheelersburg High School, holds a 3.80 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. The righthander was responsible for one win and one save this season while holding a 12.00 ERA. He struck out 14 batters in 30.0 innings pitched while also throwing a pair of complete games. Stegman was inducted in the National Student Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma) earlier this spring.
Uy, a pitcher out of Akron North High School, carries a 3.76 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. The lefty had a 2-4 record with a 6.52 ERA this season including two complete game performances. He tallied 15 strikeouts in 48.1 innings pitched over his 11 appearances. Uy was inducted in the National Student Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma) earlier this spring.
Veenstra, an infielder out of West Geauga High School, holds a 3.75 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. He was third on the team with a .372 batting average this season and led the team with a .518 on-base percentage. The native of Chesterland, Ohio led CU with 23 walks and was third on the roster with 27 runs scored. Veenstra started 25 of the team's 38 games this season.
Capital finished the 2009 season ninth in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 12-26 overall record and a 4-14 mark in conference play. CU suffered eight of its 26 losses by two runs or less while boasting a roster that consisted of just four seniors and three juniors.
