NEW ORLEANS - Recent Capital University graduate
Doug Gibbons was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team on Monday. Capital was one of just six Ohio schools to place at least one student-athlete on the list.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
Gibbons (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS) became Capital's first ever All-American in the pole vault this spring at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. After entering the event ranked 13th nationally, he finished fifth with a school record jump of 15-11.25'. Gibbons is the CU program record holder both indoors and outdoors in the pole vault. He placed third in the 2009 OAC Outdoor Championships and fourth in the OAC Indoor Championships.
Gibbons was also Capital's 2009 male recipient of the Clyde Lamb award given annually to the Best male and female student-athletes at each OAC institution. The two-time OAC All-Academic Team member is a recent graduate of Capital with a degree in Art History and Theatre.
Capital University saw all five performers in the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships reach All-American status. CU also played host to the 2009 OAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and was home to the 2009 OAC Outdoor Field Performer of the Year. The Crusader women tied the school record for point scored at the 2009 OAC Outdoor Championships. Overall, Capital boasted OAC Champions in eight individual events and two relays during the 2009 indoor and outdoor seasons.
