Matt Uy, Baseball Senior, Biology
Akron, Ohio
I WILL get into medical school.
I WILL leave everything I have left on the field this season.
I WILL overcome any challenge placed in front of me.
A pitcher on Capital's baseball team, senior Matt Uy is excited and optimistic about the team's upcoming season. Capital sports information assistant Bryan DeArdo recently talked with Uy about his Biology major, Capital's upcoming season, and who was his favorite major league pitcher was growing up.
BD: Being Biology major, have you thought about going to medical school, and if so, what schools are you interested in?
MU: Yeah actually my main goal is to get into medical school. I think I want to stay in Ohio for medical school. I'd like to go to Ohio State, Case Western, or Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
BD: What first intrigued you about the medical field?
MU: The medical field is challenging, heartbreaking, and rewarding. Kind of like baseball (laughs). But most of all I think it's a way that I can use my talents to help others.
BD: Are you a fan of the television show House?
MU: Yeah, definitely. That's one of my favorite shows on TV. The stories are always interesting and the humor keeps it from being just another medical drama.
BD: Discussing baseball, what are your individual and team aspirations for the upcoming season?
MU: My individual goals are to improve in every aspect of my game. I want to give up less runs, walks, and hits. And as far as the team is concerned, winning an OAC Championship has been my goal every year.
BD: What is it going to take for Capital baseball to compete for an OAC championship this season?
MU: For us to compete for a championship we are going to have to master the fundamentals. We are going to have an experienced lineup this year and I think that means we will make less mistakes. We have to be more aggressive than we ever have before. In every aspect, hitting, pitching, fielding, base running and, practice.
BD: Would you prefer to switch from metal bats to wooden bats, which is what the professionals use?
MU: Being a pitcher I'd prefer to switch to wood bats. I think there would be a lot less bloop hits and a lot more broken bats. I don't know if our hitters would see it the same way though (laughs).
BD: What is your favorite sport to play other than baseball?
MU: If I'm just playing for fun I like shooting hoops or maybe some backyard football.
BD: Did you have a favorite baseball player and team growing up?
MU: Growing up my favorite player was Pedro Martinez because he wasn't a big guy like me, but he was still one of the best pitchers in the majors. And for my favorite team, some of my best memories are going to Cleveland Indians games with my dad.
BD: What does Matt Uy enjoy doing when he is not studying and playing baseball?
MU: I'm a pretty boring guy (laughing). I like working out, being outdoors, hanging out with my girlfriend, and watching movies.
BD: What are you looking forward to the most about your senior year at Capital?
MU: I'm looking forward to being around the guys on the team for one last season. After this season my competitive baseball career will probably be over so I'm going to leave everything I have left on the field and I'm proud I could do it with the guys on this team.
