Sara Hagan, Women's Soccer Senior, Marking Major, Public Relations Minor
Dublin, OH/Dublin Jerome HS
I WILL do my best to lead this team to the OAC regular season title
I WILL keep myself and the team motivated all season
I WILL work in marketing and public relations
Wondering what's the latest fashion for the summer and fall? Asking Capital women's soccer senior Sara Hagan may not be a bad idea. The Marketing major and Public Relations minor recently talked about her summer internship with The Limited, and also discussed her first three years at Capital and her goals for this season.
BD: What is the goal for yourself and the team heading into this season?
SH: We have won tournament titles here, but haven't been able to find our momentum early and consistent enough to win the regular season championship. My goal is to help our team get in the right mindset early in the season, and to keep us going throughout the season to get that title.
BD: Let's settle a score right now. Molly Sheils told me that you and Chelsea Caldwell are the two best dressers on the team, but she didn't say who was best dresser between the two of you. Would you like to make a case for yourself?
SH: I'm flattered to be mentioned, but I'm giving the fashion tile to Chelsea (laughs).
BD: Are you an impulse buyer when you shop?
SH: Oh yes I am. It stinks because it's so easy to see something you like and buy it without thinking it through first. You just need to stop and think about whether you really need whatever it is you're going to buy before you buy it.
BD: What have you been doing over the summer?
SH: I got an internship for a marketing position at The Limited Brand with Victoria's Secret. I have been helping out with their Pink store department, and will be doing marketing and public relations work with them.
BD: What is a more gratifying feeling: scoring a goal during a match or finding a great marketing strategy at your internship?
SH: That's a tough question, but probably coming up with the marketing strategy because that's what I'm going for in my career field. It's a cool thing when you can find out the target audience you're going for and how the company is going to go about marketing toward what they want.
BD: Does good chemistry off the field make a team more united when they're on the field?
SH: Oh yeah. We get together a lot off the field. It's good to have everyone just get together and have fun, and I think it helps you gel once you're on the field.
BD: How much running and endurance is required when preparing for the soccer season?
SH: There is definitely a lot of training. We have a summer training program that encompasses distance running and sprinting and strength work. It's a lot of constant movement, so you have to have a high level of fitness. Coach (Dwight) Burgess does a great job of getting us a great conditioning plan so that we'll be one of the more fit teams in the conference.
BD: What's the best perk about being a college athlete?
SH: I get to do what I love and I also get to focus on my school curriculum. I get the opportunity to play a sport I love doing.
BD: What are your plans after graduation?
SH: I'd love to land a job in marketing and public relations or going to graduate school for an MBA. I want to move to the East Coast for a change of environment.
BD: What has been one of your biggest moments as an athlete thus far?
SH: Winning the Division I state title as a sophomore. I was around a high caliber of players, many of them ended up playing Division I college soccer. I'm still close to a lot of those players.
BD: Is the chemistry you had with your high school team similar to the one you have with your current Capital teammates?
SH: The chemistry is a little bit different with every team. But the tradition and expectation is the same here as it was at Dublin. Here, we've set the bar so high to a point where we expect to be at the top of the conference every year.
