BOX SCORE SALISBURY, Md. - Even in defeat, Capital men's soccer coach Dwight Burgess found positive signs following the team's 4-0 setback at Salisbury State in the 2009 Elmer Lord Memorial Classic.
"It wasn't the result that we wanted, but we take away some good signs from this game," Burgess said. "The game was tied going into the second half, and then I think we just ran out of gas a little bit. The third goal came on a penalty kick, and the fourth came when we were pressing and left ourselves exposed on defense a little bit. But overall, we were still in the game with 20 minutes left, which is good considering that we were playing a very talented team."
The scoreless standstill was broken 7:78 into the second half, when Salisbury's (2-0-0) Chris Finney set up Nick Malone, whose kick found the lower right corner of Capital's (0-2-0) net for a 1-0 advantage.
Alex Hargrove's pass to Kyle Sterling from the top of the box in the 66th minute increased Salisbury's advantage to 2-0.
Hargrove added a penalty kick for his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute, and Morgan Hunt's helper to Finney with 15:40 left in the game finished off the scoring.
The defeat also showed the facets of Capital's game that needs improvement.
"We can't give up seven goals over a two game span and expect to win. There are some issues defensively that we will work on," Burgess said. "The team will get better, and the we as coaches will work on keeping the team positive. This team is talented and will be successful, but it may just take a little more time than we thought. Tomorrow is a new day."
Capital will look to rebound Sunday with a 1:00pm date with St. Mary's.
