BOX SCORE SALISBURY, Md. - Led by the leadership of their seniors and an influx of talented freshmen, the Capital women's soccer started the season on a high note by defeating Guilford 2-0 at the Elmer Lord Invitational.
A pair of second half goals by seniors Molly Sheils (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville HS) and Katie Robinson (Grove City, Ohio/Bishop Ready HS) spearheaded the Crusaders to victory.
"We had a very good day today," said head coach Dwight Burgess, whose team outshot Guilford 26-3. "The seniors really led us today. They established the tempo and really led our defensive attack."
After a scoreless first half, Shelis got her shot by goalie Rose Bussey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City HS) for a 1-0 lead in the game's 54th minute. Robinson added the insurance goal with an unassisted goal in the 85th minute.
Burgess also was pleased with the performance of his freshmen.
"I've really been impressed with how quickly the freshmen have adjusted to the college game," Burgess said. "The recruits have shown up and have really meshed with the seniors. This team is coming together well, and having five more games in the next two weeks before conference play will helps us out even more."
Capital will seek their second win in as many days tomorrow against Methodist at 11:00am.
