COLUMBUS, Ohio - Homestanding Capital was paced by big performances from juniors Samantha Shaffer and Kellie Gustin in a 6-0 rout of Anderson during a non-conference women's soccer match at Bernlohr Stadium. With the win, Capital remained perfect on the season at 3-0-0.
Shaffer (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS) finished with a goal and two assists while Gustin added one goal and one assist as the Crusaders won by their largest margin in program history since an Oct. 13, 2007 defeat of Heidelberg (7-0).
Overall, Capital out shot Anderson 27-5 and held an 11-1 lead in corner kicks as Capital played all 24 field players in uniform during the match.
Senior Molly Sheils (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville HS) opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a redirect of a corner kick by junior Kaylee Phillips (Watkins, Ohio/Watkins Memorial HS).
Shaffer followed with goal of her own off a cross by fellow junior Kellie Gustin (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro HS) just over three minutes later for a 2-0 Crusader lead.
Then in the 39th minute, junior Lauren Bartsch (Milford, Ohio/Milford HS) punched in a rebound at the feet of the Raven's keeper for a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Capital added two more goals in the 57th and 58th minutes on assists by Shaffer. First Gustin found the back of the net followed by Robinson as CU increased its lead to 5-0.
The Crusaders added one more goal in the 86th minute when sophomore Tara Zimmer (Vandalia, Ohio/Vandalia-Butler HS) chipped a ball over to freshman Megan Bogden (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany HS) who scored for a 6-0 Crusader victory.
Junior Linley Vermillion (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS) played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves for Capital who returns to action this weekend in Spokane, Wash. at the Whitworth Tournament. CU takes on Whitman on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET followed by host Whitworth on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
