MEN’S SOCCER GETS EVEN IN 5-0 WIN OVER ANDERSON

BOX SCORE

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University men's soccer team recorded its second consecutive shutout with a 5-0 non-conference victory over visiting Anderson on Wednesday at Bernlohr Stadium.  The win evened CU's overall record this season at 2-2-0.

Senior All-American Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) took part in three of Capital's five goals on the evening with two scores of his own and one assist.

The senior teamed up with his brother, sophomore Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) with a back and forth exchange 10 feet in front of the goal mouth for Capital's first score in the ninth minute of action.

CU then scored off a corner kick that was deflected home by an Anderson defender in the 28th minute before Steven McCarthy came back again to feed fellow senior Jason Murray (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central HS) for another score from 10 feet out just two minutes later as Capital built a 3-0 lead at the halftime intermission.

McCarthy then found the back of the net again himself in the 65th minute.  The senior beat a defender on his own and drilled the ball into the corner of the ogal for a 4-0 Crusader lead.

Capital closed out the scoring in the 84th minute when freshman Chris Fountain (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington HS) redirected a corner kick by sophomore Jeremy Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) for a 5-0 Capital victory.

Sophomore Daren Scarberry (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City HS) and senior Jason Rothwell (Vandalia, Ohio/Vandalia-Butler HS) combined to earn the shutout for Capital, which returns to action this weekend in Spokane, Wash. at the Whitworth Tournament.  CU takes on Pacific Lutheran on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET followed by host Whitworth on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
