MEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN OVERTIME, 3-2

BOX SCORE

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite two goals by senior All-American Steven McCarthy, Capital fell to Pacific Lutheran, 3-2 in overtime on Friday during the opening day of the 2009 Whitworth Soccer Classic.

Capital (2-3-0) matched Pacific Lutheran (3-1-0) in shots (17-17) and trailed by just two in corner kicks (7-5) in a match that was back and forth from start to finish.

PLU got on the board with a nice finish off a cross in the sixth minute.  However, CU came back with a score of its own in the 10th minute when senior Mike Gregory (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South HS) flicked a ball forward with his head to the foot of McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) who finished to knot the score at 1-1.

Pacific Lutheran scored again in the 50th minute to take another lead, but McCarthy would strike back once again for Capital.  In the 74th minute, Crusader goalkeeper Daren Scarberry (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City HS) cleared the ball from his defensive zone with a long punt.  McCarthy ran under the ball and found the back of the net for his fifth goal in as many matches this season.

The match would head to overtime tied at 2-2 until Chad Kearns would put a shot just under the far post in the 97th minute to send Capital home with a 3-2 defeat.

Scarberry made nine saves for Capital which returns to action against host and nationally-ranked (#16) Whitworth on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
