WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN OVERTIME AT WHITWORTH, 2-1

BOX SCORE

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite a first half goal by freshman Brooke Lewis (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson HS), the Capital women's soccer team suffered its second straight overtime loss to host Whitworth, 2-1.

"It was an interesting weekend for both of our teams," CU Head Coach Dwight Burgess said.  "Out ladies played two games beautifully and gave themselves a chance to win both."

Capital (3-2) took the lead in the 39th minute of the match, with Lewis netting her first collegiate goal after being assisted by fellow freshman Lauren Smith (Lebanon, OH/Lebanon HS), who recorded her first career helper.

Whitworth responded in the match's 72nd minute, as Sidonia Davin assisted on Lindsey Oakes' game-tying goal. Hammer's unassisted goal came in the 94th minute. Then Stacy Hammer of Whitworth scored her first goal of the season less than four minutes into overtime.

After tallying seven first half shots, the Crusaders scoring chances were limited in the second half, as Capital produced two shots to Whitworth's eight. The home team outshot Capital 17-8 for the match. Both teams had three corner kick opportunities.

"Despite the result, it was the kind of weekend we wanted," Burgess commented.  "To get away and challenge ourselves on and off the field.  With the time change and different surroundings as well as playing some talented teams we did that this weekend."

With the setback, Capital falls to 2-2 on the road this season, and will return to action at Kenyon on Thursday at 5:00pm.
