BOX SCORE SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior Steven McCarthy scored three goals and assisted on another as visiting Capital defeated the host #16 Whitworth, 4-2 on Sunday at the Whitworth Soccer Classic. The Crusaders' second win over a ranked opponent in as many seasons lifted their record to 3-3-0 on the season.
"It was a big day for our seniors who really stepped up," CU Head Coach Dwight Burgess said. "Robbie (Breen) and Kevin (Doran) manned the middle for us and allowed Steven McCarthy to do what Steven McCarthy does, which is score lots and lots of goals."
McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) now has eight goals and four assists for 20 points in just six matches this season for Capital. He has scored his eight goals on only 14 shots on goal this season. Overall, McCarthy has 53 career goals scored and 121 career points.
After the Pirates (2-1-1) scored in the 11th minute of action, McCarthy evened the scoreboard in the 24th minute off a feed from his brother Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS).
Steven McCarthy found the back of the net again in the 33rd minute off an assist by fellow senior Kevin Doran (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy HS) for a 2-1 Capital lead heading into the halftime intermission.
McCarthy then created an offensive opportunity for sophomore Jeremy Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) who scored his first goal of the season just six minutes into the second half of play for a 3-1 Crusader advantage.
Host Whitworth came back to within a goal with a score of its own in the 64th minute, but McCarthy put an exclamation point on a great day for him and the Crusaders with an unassisted goal in the final minute of play as Capital went on to a 4-2 victory.
"It was an interesting weekend for both of our teams," Burgess said. "We came out here to get challenged on and off the field and we did."
Junior Justin Bultman (Maineville, Ohio/Kings Mills HS) made two saves for CU which returns to action on Wednesday at Denison in a 7 p.m. match.
