GRANVILLE, Ohio - Sophomore Daniel McCarthy scored two unanswered goals to push Capital past Denison, 2-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday at Barclay Thomsen Field.
The Crusaders (4-3-0) fell behind early when the Big Red (3-2-1) found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Denison's Chris Olsen blasted a shot that deflected off a Capital defender and went past the CU goalkeeper for a 1-0 DU lead.
Capital applied offensive pressure for the next few minutes which resulted in a great scoring opportunity by Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS). McCarthy fired the ball from 15 yards out towards the lower right of the goal and scored to even the match at 1-1 in the 33rd minute.
Both teams were tied at halftime when the 2008 OAC Midfielder of the Year took four shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Then in the 58th minute, McCarthy got the ball one-on-one with a defender and dribbled past him and shot the ball into the top left corner of the goal for a 2-1 Capital lead.
Overall, Capital did not record a single corner kick while Denison earned seven chances. However, the Crusaders offensive pressure was evident as they were whistled offsides three times and took 11 shots overall including five that were on goal. McCarthy had six of the 11 CU shots taken on the night.
The Crusaders will remain on the road with a pair of women's-men's doubleheaders this weekend. Capital will head to Hanover on Saturday before traveling to Mount St. Joseph on Sunday.
