BOX SCORE COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital men's soccer team used goals from four different players to secure a 4-1 win on Sunday against Thomas More in a meeting of two of the top teams in the Great Lakes Region at Bernlohr Stadium.
The matchup between the No. 9 (CU) and No. 10 (TMC) teams in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Regional Poll was controlled by the Crusaders who scored on three of their five shots on goal in the match.
CU's four different goal scorers on the day led by senior Robbie Breen (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) who tallied a goal and an assist. Senior Josh Thaboune (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) and sophomore Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) also scored along senior Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) who moved up the OAC Career Records List.
Steven McCarthy now has 14 goals and 32 points scored this season. He is currently tied for fourth all-time in OAC career goals scored with 59 and is alone in sixth place with 133 career points.
Capital got on the board in the 28th minute as Robbie Breen took a long feed into the left side of the box and scored on his second attempt around a defender for a 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders kept up the pressure and scored another goal just before the half when senior Kevin Doran (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy HS) drove a long ball on the right side from 40 yards out just in front of classmate Steven McCarthy who beat the keeper for his 14th goal of the season and a 2-0 CU advantage.
Sophomore Daniel McCarthy headed home a goal of his own off a pass from Breen in the 57th minute for a 3-0 lead.
The Saints broke through with a goal off two rebounds and past the Crusader keeper for its only score of the match. The goal in the 64th minute broke a streak of 410:18 scoreless minutes by the Capital defense.
Senior Josh Thaboune got the lead back up to three goals in the 81st minute when he took a cross field pass from Jeremy Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) at the top of the box and blasted it past the Thomas More keeper for a 4-1 Capital victory.
Sophomore Daren Scarberry (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City HS) made five saves to help Capital to its sixth consecutive victory.
Capital opens up Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a trip to John Carroll for a 1 p.m. start.
