AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Sophomore placekicker
Garrett Bennington picked up his second consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Special Team Player of the Week award on Monday after a perfect kicking day to help nationally-ranked Capital defeat Marietta, 37-13.
Bennington (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn HS) went 3-for-3 in field goal attempts from distances of 29, 23, and 25 yards while also making 4-of-4 PAT kicks. He also averaged 57.1 yards per kickoff for the then-#22 Crusaders.
Overall this season, Bennington is 9-for-11 in field goal tries including a 9-for-10 mark in attempts under 40 yards. He leads the nation with 2.25 made field goals per game this season. Bennington is also 14-of-16 in PAT kicks this fall.
Last week, the sophomore was among 13 placekickers nationally to be recognized by The Fred Mitchell Award for their excellence on the field and in the community during the month of September. Bennington was also named the OAC Special Teams Player of the Week last Monday.
Capital (now No. 21 in the D3Football.com Top 25 Poll) will have its first opportunity to face another nationally ranked opponent this Saturday when it plays host to #1 Mount Union.
