BOX SCORE COLUMBUS, Ohio- Despite outshooting Ohio Northern and registering a goal by junior Natasha Ballard (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) in the second half, the Capital women's soccer team fell to the Polar Bears 2-1 in an OAC matchup.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Crusader (7-3-2, 1-1-0 OAC) offense began to assert itself in the second half, forcing five corner kicks to the Polar Bears' two (Capital had seven corner kicks for the match).
CU tied the match up in the 73rd minute when junior midfielder Kellie Gustin (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro HS) lofted a perfect pass in the box that Ballard headed past ONU's Kristen DeWees. The goal was Ballard's her third of the year and was Gustin's third assist of the season.
The Polar Bears showed why they have been nationally ranked at times this season by responding barely five minutes later, when Kaitlin Sanders' corner kick was headed into Capital's net by Stacy Barnhart to put the visitors on top 2-1.
Junior keeper Linley Vermillion (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont HS) made nine save for the Crusaders, who were outshot 21-12 (CU did outshoot ONU 9-8 in the second half). The Polar Bears also enjoyed an 11-6 shots on goal advantage.
Capital will play at Muskingum Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
