BOX SCORE COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Cory Trump provided the only goal of the day on a header in the first half, which lifted the Capital men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Heidelberg in a pivotal OAC matchup.
CU's sixth straight victory at home improved the Crusaders' record to 14-4-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in the OAC. Capital also maintained their second place standing in the OAC. Capital is tied with Baldwin-Wallace, but owns the tiebreaker over the Yellow Jackets if both teams win their final match. The top two teams in the OAC earn a bye to the Semifinals of next week's OAC Tournament. The Student Princes fell to 8-7-2 and 3-4-1 in the conference.
Trump's (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) first goal of the season was the product of an assist by classmate Daniel McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) in the match's 34th minute. McCarthy's corner kick found Trump inside the Heidelberg box for his sixth assist of the campaign.
Obtaining free kicks and maintaining possession of the ball keyed Capital's victory in the second half, as the Crusaders netted 18 shots against a Student Prince defense that had only averaged 12 shots allowed per contest. Leading the Capital charge were Danny and Steven McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS), who combined for eight shots.
Heidelberg's best chance to tie up the match was thwarted by the CU defense with approximately three minutes left in the contest, when the Crusaders blocked a free kick by the Student Princes from just outside the Capital box. The free ball was chased down by junior midfielder Lewis Black (Auckland, New Zealand), who cleared the ball out of harms way to preserve Capital's eighth shutout of the season.
Compiling six saves in goal for CU was junior Justin Bultman (Maineville, Ohio/Kings Mills HS), who improved his record to 9-2 while recording his fourth shutout of the year.
The Purple and White upped their record to 6-0-0 when holding their OAC opposition to one goal or less this season, and have now outscored their opponents 19-2 in their last six home matches.
CU will close out the regular season by hosting rival Otterbein in an OAC showdown Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Fans can follow the action with FREE Live Stats, Video and Audio at www.CapitalCrusaders.net.
