The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching
No matter how talented a student you are, sooner or later you're going to have questions. They may be small, like how to solve a pesky equation. They may be large, like how to take notes or focus better in class.
But either way, we've got you covered.
We're the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). And we have one goal: to make Capital an enriching place where success breeds more success. We'll give you the services you need to shine in the classroom, in every subject area and at every level.
Capital's faculty and staff are here to help you learn, so CELT supports their learning, too. We help our faculty find grants to explore new teaching techniques. We help faculty and staff sharpen their skills through free workshops and seminars.
CELT is for the entire Capital community. So come to Room 100, Ruff Learning Center and let us know what you need!
Academic Support Services
Your learning style, schedule and academic needs are yours alone, and they're constantly changing. But CELT's academic service options are flexible enough to keep pace.
Peer Tutoring
Would you prefer to get your academic questions addressed one-on-one? Book an appointment with one of CELT's faculty-recommended Peer Tutors. These committed and highly trained student volunteers have earned high grades in the specific classes they tutor. Whether it's nursing or accounting or math, they can help you:
- Get a stronger grasp of subject-area concepts
- Review materials
- Prepare for exams
- Improve your writing
Academic Coaching
College is different from high school in ways you might not expect. You have to budget your time more carefully. You have to study more effectively and think in different ways. And CELT can help you meet these challenges head-on.
Our Academic Services Coordinator can give you study strategies and resources you can apply to all your classes. These include:
- Note taking
- Textbook reading and comprehension
- Exam preparation and test-taking
Study and Review Sessions
What with student activities, band practice and more, it can be tough to keep scheduled tutoring appointments. So CELT's Peer Facilitators hold drop-in study and review sessions every week for selected courses. You'll get help from your Peer Facilitator and fellow classmates in a relaxed group setting. You can come on the spur of the moment and often as you need to.
Supplemental Instruction
Somewhere along the line, you'll take one of those courses that even the best students find challenging. But with CELT's new Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, you'll have a much better shot at success.
If a trained SI Leader is assigned to your class, s/he will actually attend classes and take notes just like you do. Afterward, she/he will hold a group session to:
- Review the exact material that was covered in class
- Help you prepare for upcoming exams
- Teach you the most effective learning techniques
Studies show that this is a highly effective way to master difficult concepts.
In addition to academic services, CELT also houses Capital's Office of Disability Services (ODS). Learn how Capital creates productive learning environments for students with disabilities.
