CRUSADERS WELL REPRESENTED IN OAC WEEKLY HONORSAUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Capital was recognized for their basketball and track & field success over the past week, with four Crusaders tabbed as Ohio Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week on Monday.
CAPITAL TAKES ON TOP COMPETITION AT OAC RELAYSBEREA, Ohio – The Capital University men’s and women’s track & field teams endured a long day of competition against the best in the Ohio Athletic Conference at the OAC Relays on Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace College. The Crusader women finished eighth while the men were 10th.
TRADITION OF MEN’S TRACK & FIELD RENEWED IN 2000sA historically successful men’s track & field program renewed its tradition and winning ways in the 2000s. Head Coach Fred Barends came to Capital from Ohio Wesleyan in the summer of 2002 and took over a program in its second year of expansion after a 16-year hiatus.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD REACHES NATIONAL PROMINENCE INAUGURAL DECADEAfter claiming seven conference championships during his last five seasons as the headmaster at Ohio Wesleyan University, Capital track & field Head Coach Fred Barends arrived on campus in 2002 and began a women’s track program that has made immense strides during his watch over the past eight years.
CAPITAL JUMPSTARTS INDOOR SEASON WITH PURPLE AND WHITE INVITECOLUMBUS, Ohio- The Capital indoor track & field team staged an impressive showing en route to winning the Purple and White Invitational on Saturday. The host Crusaders tallied 198 points on the men’s side, followed by OAC foe Wilmington College (162), Ohio Wesleyan (43), and Kenyon (27). The women totaled 155.5 points, followed by Wright State (118), Wilmington (61), Ohio Wesleyan (37), and Kenyon (26.5).
I WILL - Brittany CarterAll-American Brittney Carter has already left an indelible mark on Capital’s track and field team during her first three years in college. Carter talked with sports information assistant Bryan DeArdo about her career thus far, how she looks to be a leader on next year’s team, and her love of family and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I WILL - Erik BarenwaldWhile he may never catch up to the incorporable Phelps, sophomore Erik Barenwald did spend his summer swimming in the local neighborhood lake in preparation for his upcoming year of playing football and throwing for the track team. Barenwald talked about his dual sport career amongst other things with Sports Information Assistant Bryan DeArdo in the latest "I WILL" interview.
I WILL - Kwesi SeabrookAfter a three-year hiatus from sports, sophomore Kwesi Seabrook decided to run track this past season and turned in one of the finest freshman seasons in school history. Seabrook recently talked with sports information assistant Bryan DeArdo about returning to the sport after a three-year absence, her time as an NCAA athlete, and her secret talent.
I WILL - Jennifer FekpeWhen asked in an old commercial whether he was going to play baseball or football that upcoming year, Deion Sanders responded, “Both.” This also is the case for Jennifer Fekpe, who serves and spikes with the volleyball team in the fall and races for the Crusader track team in the winter and spring. Sports Information Assistant Bryan DeArdo caught up with Fekpe to talk to her about both sports.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD HONORED AS A 2009 USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMNEW ORLEANS – For the seventh consecutive season, the Capital University women’s track & field program garnered All-Academic Team honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Capital was one of just 100 NCAA Division III programs to achieve that status this spring.
SEABROOK GARNERS USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC HONORSNEW ORLEANS – Capital University freshman sprinter Kwesi Seabrook was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team on Tuesday. Capital was one of just seven Ohio schools to place at least one student-athlete on the list.
I WILL - Ricky CantrellA nursing major, Ricky Cantrell is studying to take care of hospital patients for a living. For now, Cantrell is taking care of business on the track, as well as building a legacy as a sprinter on the men’s track and field team. Cantrell recently took a break from his off-season lifting session to talk with sports information assistant Bryan DeArdo about his first two years at Capital, his new role as a team leader, and what he would with $100 at Best Buy.
CAPITAL UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES 2009 ATHLETICS AWARD WINNERSCOLUMBUS – Capital University will recognize seven with athletics awards including four new members of the Capital University Athletics Hall of Fame at a dinner following the first home football game of the fall on September 19.
I WILL - Lizzy StantonLizzy Stanton started her collegiate career walking into The Capital Center four years ago with a goal to improve both herself and the women’s track and field team. She left an outdoor three-time All-American and is the first women in school history to earn All-America honors. CU POSTS RECORD SETTING DAY AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSMARIETTA, Ohio - Junior Jessica Starks led Capital to a memorable final day at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Marietta College. The women’s 4x100 meter relay squad placed third while individually Starks was eighth in the 200 meter dash.
STARKS PLACES 15TH IN 100 DASH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSMARIETTA, Ohio - In a field consisting of the NCAA’s best Division III 100 meter sprinters, junior Jessica Starks showed her mettle by running a 12.50, which tied her for 15th out of 21 runners in the 100m Trial Friday at the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
GIBBONS LEADS CAPITAL ON DAY ONE OF TRACK & FIELD AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSMARIETTA, Ohio - Capital's Doug Gibbons reached All-America status with a fifth place finish in the pole vault. CAPITAL DUO NAMED TO OAC TRACK & FIELD ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMAUSTINTOWN, Ohio – A pair of Capital University men’s track & field student-athletes were named to the OAC All-Academic Team on Friday following a vote conducted amongst the conference’s faculty athletics representatives. GIBBONS SETS NEW SCHOOL RECORD AT GREGORY INVITATIONALNAPERVILLE, Ill. – Capital University senior Doug Gibbons broke his own school record in the pole vault on Thursday evening at the 2009 Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central College. His jump was the 12th best in the nation this spring and sends him to the 2009 NCAA Championships next weekend.

CRUSADER TRIO PACES CAPITAL AT REV. MIKE HOUT INVITATIONALCOLUMBUS, Ohio - In the second meet of the season, the Capital University men and women’s indoor track teams both finished in fourth place at the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational. The women scored 74.5 points, and the men tallied 72 points.

Track & Field Garners Academic Honors From Coaches' Association(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Juniors Tana Myers (Ashland/Mapleton) and Doug Gibbons (Troy/Troy) earned All-Academic Track and Field honors for a second straight year, as did the entire women’s team, by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Three is a Charm as Starks is Three Time All-American at NCAA Track & Field Championships(OSHKOSH, Wis.)--Capital University sophomore Jessica Starks (Akron/Akron East) earned All-American honors in three separate events Saturday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Starks set a new school record and finished seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.11, she placed fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.04 then combined with fellow sophomore Brittney Carter (Columbus/Westerville South) and juniors Tana Myers (Ashland/Mapleton) and Lizzy Stanton (Cincinnati/Withrow) to place eighth in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 47.62. Starks is just the third three time All-American in school history joining Rick Meindl (1978) and Stanton who along with the relay, earned the honor in the long jump in both this meet and the NCAA indoor meet earlier this year. Doug Gibbons Named Academic All-OAC Men's Track & Field(AUSTINTOWN, Ohio)--Capital University junior pole vaulter Doug Gibbons (Troy/Troy) was selected Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Track & Field by the conference's 10 faculty athletics representatives.
Gibbons is an All-OAC selection and the school record holder in the indoor pole vault with a mark of 15-5. Off the track he is an Art & Theater major with a 3.72 cumulative grade point average. Click the link above to see the complete team.
Three Crusaders Named Academic All-OAC Women's Track & Field(AUSTINTOWN, Ohio)--Capital University seniors Christina Heineike (Sunbury/Big Walnut), Christie Lee-Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and sophomore Blair Chance (Hamilton/Fairfield) were all selected Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Track & Field by the conference's 10 faculty athletics representatives. Heineike is a Health & Fitness Management major with a 3.98 grade point average, Miller is an Athletic Training major with a 3.58 gpa and Chance is a Biology major with a 3.91 gpa.
