Capital Junior Winds

Junior Winds is a band for exceptional musicians grades 7-9, with outstanding 6th graders occasionally accepted. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 beginning in September. During the year there are three concerts: one in November (near Thanksgiving), a Prism Concert in late February and one the first Sunday in May. This year Junior Winds has been invited by the OAAE to perform at the opening of Arts Day in late March. The literature studied by Junior Winds falls within the Grade 2+ to 4+ range. Students interested in auditioning for Junior Winds are encouraged to participate in Capital University’s Winds and Percussion summer camp.  The Junior Winds conductor, Mr. James Dowdy is a conductor at the camp, and the repertoire used is typical of the Junior Winds level.  Auditions are held in May, and the annual tuition is $200.  For further information contact James Dowdy at JiMuzik@aol.com.

Columbus Youth Symphonic Band

The Columbus Youth Symphonic Band organization, under the direction of Dr. Barry E. Kopetz , includes the premiere wind and percussion students from the greater central Ohio area.  Now in its fourth season, the CYSB is proudly sponsored by the CPD at Capital University with additional support from the Conservatory of Music.  The ensemble rehearses from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings beginning several weeks after school begins. The CYSB presents concerts in the Fall and Spring in Mees Hall on the Capital University campus.

The CYSB is comprised of 75 musicians and is modeled upon the traditional concert band instrumentation.  All sections have student musicians who have achieved a marked level of excellence.  It is expected that each member assumes individual responsibility for the quality of performance.  The goal of the CYSB is to provide exceptional enrichment experiences for students in grades 10 – 12 and for those students to carry those experiences back to their school band programs.

Auditions for the CYSB occur each year during the month of May.  Interested students may request a hard copy application through the CPD, or click here to go to the CYSB web page to download the application form.  The annual fee is $215.

Columbus Youth Chorale

This choir meets weekly and is composed of high school students, grades 9-12, from throughout central Ohio.  A Spring audition is required for entrance into the Chorale.  The annual fee is $200.
