Lou Fischer

Dr. Lou Fischer is Professor of Music, jazz activities coordinator, and jazz ensemble director at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where he directs the Big Band, teaches American Pop/Jazz Theory, jazz arranging, and jazz bass. A member of the UNTX One O'Clock Lab Band ('71-'74), Fischer holds degrees from: University of Denver-BM in jazz performance, magna cum laude ('91); MA in Composition with Honors ('92); and Ball State University-Doctor of Arts in Bass Performance, with a secondary in theory and composition and was inducted into Phi Kappa Lambda ('99).

Lou is a Yamaha Performing Artist/Clinician and currently jazz division head for the Bands of America Summer Symposium. His 41-year career credentials represent a veritable Who's Who in American Music, including composing and/or performing over two thousand commercial advertisements, over fifty Broadway Shows, and extensive touring with: The Crusaders, Red Rodney, Rich Matteson & TubaJazz, Airto, Charlie Byrd, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Jimmy Heath, Emmy Lou Harris, Woody Herman, Louis Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Bobby Shew. With four album releases under his own name, other recordings include Steve Houghton's Tribute to Gershwin: The Manne We Love; two Bill Watrous compact disks titled A Time For Love and Bone-I-fied; the Shelly Berg Trio: The Joy; Frank Mantooth's Big Band titled A Miracle; and Sunny Wilkinson's big band release High Wire.

Dr. Fischer has performed and/or presented clinics in major venues in Europe, Canada, Japan, Korea, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Mexico, and three hundred plus institutions in the U.S., and has directed All State Ensembles in Texas, North Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Louisiana. He is published by Hal Leonard, Walrus, and Alfred Music Publishing and is a frequent contributor to the Jazz Educator's Journal.

Lou is currently the Vice President of the Jazz Education Network.
