Choices, Choices, Choices.....How much in life is "your choice"? Burger King suggests that with their menu, you can have it your way. For those of us that grew up with the Nickelodeon game show "Legends of the Hidden Temple", we were reminded every episode by the large talking stone head Olmec that "the choices are yours and yours alone...." Frank Sinatra famously crooned that he did it "my way."
Here are just some examples of "choices" that have been highlighted in my own life recently, and I would like to share them with you..... If after reading this thesis you no longer want to continue reading-thats fine...it's your choice!!
1. I've been filling out NCAA Men's Basketball tournament brackets since I was in diapers..ok- so maybe I started a few years past the diapers...but little Marta started choosing who she thought would win games at a very early age. Some kids watched cartoons before school; I watched Sport's Center with my dad and brother. For a while the strategy was, "Marta....point to one of these teams..." Later, I began merely choosing based not on athletic prowess, but on the
cooler-sounding school name or mascot. (ok, so maybe I still do that a little bit....) I like to think my victory in my extended family's pool last year was many years in the making.
Thanks to my father, I still have a knack for this kind of choice and I already am participating in a number of pools this year...oh March Madness...thanks for allowing me to be the life-long athletic supporter that I am.
2. I am proud to announce that yesteday I was activated as a member of Pi Phi Epsilon sorority. I made it! It was a crazy journey, one that is the sole-explanatation of my lack of blog updates...but boy am I happy with my decision and choice!! I am looking forward to the commitment, the opportunities, the friendships, the growth and the experience being a member will allow me to have. Living life passionately is something I strive to do everyday, and I think it is important to put the passion you have for life into your jobs, commitments and relationships. Choosing how you go about doing this is important and this semester has provided me with these goals in so many different ways. (Much love to the Divine Nine, JEB-squared and my new sisters!!)
3. Finally, this is where prospective students come in! As a student ambassador, I give tours, work at admission events, and host overnight prospective students. As a admissions student office worker, I answer phones, help with specific projects and label, stuff and send lovely mail out to prospective students. In short, I love my job and for one main reason. For a high school student, choosing where you want to further your education for the next 4 years is a huge deal. Because I am so confident in my decision with Capital and the opportunities it has provided me, I feel like it can be my duty to give back to students who were in my shoes a mere 2 years ago. I could go on for a long time about my choice and it's result, what I think Capital has going for it, etc...but I don't want to bore you all! Please though, if you are a student looking at Capital and need any questions answered or just want to talk- feel free to contact me! mdiehm@capital.edu
Happy Choosing!!
I think thats about it. I hope you all followed that. Looking back on my thesis, I think I could have done better....but I choose not to chew on the subject any longer. That, and I also just realized I referenced Legends of the Hidden Temple earlier....and with that I KNOW it's time to stop- because using my own nostalgia that very few remember as examples does not add to this post.
A wise Canadian power-trio once said,
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
With that, Goodnight and Good luck,
-Marta-
