If There is One Thing To Remember....Grab a Sundae Spoon and Dig In!

As a sit in my nearly empty room 362, it's hard to believe the school year is over.  My computer and TV are my only entertainment and company as most everyone else moved out yesterday.

The first year at any college one may choose is quite an exciting chapter of life.  It is one of the first opportunities to truly define yourself as an individual as you start off in a new place.I'll try not to get too sentimental on you, blog readers- but it's been quite the ride.

I really want to thank anyone and everyone who has made my first year at Capital a success.  I could not have done it without you. You may be thinking that little shout out was to all the fabulous people who surrounded me with good times, support and friendship this year...but that "thank you for being there for me" reaches out to those inanimate objects that have unselfishlessly have supported and been there for me this year as well.I feel as though they each should be recognized by name.

Perhaps for students about to take the first step into college life next fall, this will be a nice little "to-bring" list....For everyone else- maybe this will be a reminder to stop and thank those things in YOUR life that love you unconditionally. So here we go.....

1. Mr. Duct Tape.  You have served 362 as well as our whole 3rd floor wing amazingly.  When there was a repair to be made, you were there, sometimes on a larger roll compared to times we were almost out of you- You did make us popular once people knew we had you...so thanks for that.  You are essential to college dorm life and without you, there would be things falling apart and falling off our walls left and right. Now I know why they say "When the going gets tough, the tough use duct tape."

2. Frebrezy McFebreze. Although, yes, I did just make up that name for you- you have made us smell oh so nice this year and for that you deserve a round of applause.  Without you, who knows what kind of friends we would have made smelling kinda bad, or how much time we might have spent doing loads of laundry. Instead, with a few sprays of you, our beds, pillows, carpets, clothes, room and yes, even ourselves smelled as if they just came out of the dryer.  As we say goodbye to the year, we will ALWAYS remember to "Frebreze It and Forget it!"

3. Ms. DVD Player-  I feel as though your name should reflect a single and female persona..because there is no on stronger and more reliable than you!  What good times we've had this semester.  Whether watching Bexley Public Library DVDs, movies from home, or episodes of Gilmore Girls and Friends--you were ready to entertain us when we needed a good laugh/cry/scare. Remember when you would play old classics that Marta has seen before as to not miss anything as she settles down for a possible nap.  How about when Marta watched countless rock-operas on you the last few days of school when she was packing and studying? Ohhh the memories.... Tommy MAY be a pinball wizard but you, my dear- are a movie-wizard-- and that puts you pretty darn high up in my list. (ok, so number 3...but who's counting....)

4. The Power Trio of Scissors, Scotch Tape, and Stapler-  When office like duties beckoned..you responded in a flash.  Purple Stapler- You came out when we were in celebration of papers being complete.  Scotchy- You were there for us, like duct tape, for those sticky situations. And Scissors....you definately make the cut.

And finally....

5. My Butters (aka Red J. Crew Flip Flops).  When I purchased you in the summer of 2003, who would have known that you'd be coverin my feet still today.  J. Crew does not make you the way they used to, and so you are my only hope.  Your squishy, worn-in soles comfort my feet smoothly and that is why you are named Butters. A pair of shower-flops are key to rely on as one makes the trek down the hall to the slippery cubicles.  You were there to comfort my feet and keep me from falling on my tush.  Mr. Butters...you my boy!

Tear drop. This is the end folks! Tonight my mother is coming to load up my stuff and its off to Pittsburgh I go.  Thanks for letting me "let it off my chest" on this little blog set up...I've enjoyed telling you of all the joys, triumphs, hardships and exciting times of MY FIRST YEAR.
Seen in the picture is an empty sundae bowl.  After my final exam on Thursday, I had the pleasure in indulging in a fabulous smore sundae.  After I was done with it, nothing was left but a marichino cherry. (which are gross, by they way).

I like to think that empty sundae bowl is a great final pictoral representation of my year, and how I try to live life.  If there's one piece of advice I could give to incoming freshman, friends, family members or anybody else, it is to truly love life.  Don't just sit in your dorm room and wait for life to happen to you.....get out there and "grab a sundae spoon" and dig in.  You'll be glad you did.

I'll leave you, of course, with a pop culture quote. "There's only us- There's only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today."  -RENT

Have a fabulous happy and healthy summer!

Diehm- out!

How absolutely lovely to stumble upon your blog, quite by accident! I'm thrilled you had an "excellent adventure" your first year. Having re-acquainted with you and your vivacious spirit, I'm not at all surprised. Have a great summer.
