e-mail: dburgess@capital.edu All things soccer on the Capital University campus point to one man - Dwight Burgess. Burgess has been the head coach of the Capital men's soccer program since 2000 and leader of the Crusader women's program since 2002.
He started at Capital in 2000 on a part-time basis with the charge of rebuilding the men's program. Since then, Burgess has changed the face of the Capital men's soccer program, winning the OAC regular season title in both 2007 and 2008 while guiding the Crusaders to national and regional recognition in both seasons. The Crusaders also won a school-record 15 matches and advanced to the OAC Tournament championship match in 2007.
In 2006, Capital finished second in the OAC and hosted an OAC Tournament game for the first time in school history. Burgess was named the 2005 OAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year.
In 2002, Burgess took over a women's program that has been one of the Great Lakes region's elite programs and has not disappointed as the Crusaders claimed the OAC's regular season title in 2004 and won the OAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2006 and 2007. For his efforts, Burgess was named the 2006 OAC Women's Coach of the Year.
Under Burgess both teams have succeeded in the classroom as well as on the field. In 2006, both the men's and women's teams were recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association with the College Team Academic Award. The award is given to college soccer teams that post a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
As a player, Burgess competed in four consecutive OHSAA Final Four Tournaments for Centerville High School. A college standout, he twice earned All-America honors and helped DePauw (Ind.) University to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament as the team’s leading scorer, before transferring to University of Dayton where he played soccer for the Flyers.
After college he was selected to two training camps for the United States National Program and named captain for a pair of regional all-star teams scoring two goals in international matches.
Burgess began focusing on the sidelines in 1983. His resume features 10 seasons of coaching at the high school level, including winning a state championship, before two years as the head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University.
Burgess spent two years on the Ohio South ODP Staff and has served as a clinician for the NSCAA and Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. He was also the founder and coaching director for F.C. Dayton Premiere and assistant coaching director for Hilliard F.C.
Burgess earned his national coaching license in 1990, a Master’s Degree from Ohio State in 1991 and when not coaching or playing soccer he is the television play-by-play voice of the Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew. In 2006, Burgess has received another broadcasting honor as he broadcasted World Cup Soccer matches for XM Satellite Radio.
A father of three, Burgess and his wife Julie reside in Powell, Ohio.
