All Amateur Softball Association rules are in effect for all leagues of play with the following as well as some discretional modifications as adopted for Capital University Intramural play.

  1. Teams:
    a. A team shall consist of 10 players, including a short fielder. A team may begin shorthanded but may never play with fewer than 8 (even in the case of an injury).
    b. Coed:
    • To field 10, there must be 5 men and 5 women on the field at all times
    • To field 9, there must be 4 or 5 men and 4 or 5 women on the field at all times
    • To field 8, there must be 4 men and 4 women on the field at all times.
  2. Equipment:
    a. Bases, ball, and some bats will be provided.
    b. Rubber or plastic cleats are recommended on the fields; NO METAL CLEATS will be allowed.
    c. A catcher’s mask will be provided and used at the discretion of the catcher.
  3. Game Play:
    A. League play:
    • 7 innings or 1 hour, whichever occurs first; no drop-dead rule, instead no new inning will start 5 minutes prior to end of the hour.
    • The 10-run mercy rule will apply after 4 innings or 3 ½ if the home team ahead.
    c. A complete game will stand after 4 innings or 3 ½ if the home team is ahead.
    d. A batter will begin with a 1 ball and 1 strike count. A 2nd foul ball third strike is an out (coed/regular league). 1 pitch rules = See Addendum if necessary.
    e. A pitch must have a 5-10 foot arc. No high-arc pitches; at no time should they Exceed approximately the height of the backstop.
    • At times, the umpire and/or catcher may declare a pitch “flat” or “high” to alert the batter that a pitch will be called a “ball”. The batter may still choose to swing at such a pitch.
    • A “strike” is a pitch that meets the arc criteria and lands on any part of either the plate and/or extension mat which is placed directly behind the plate. Otherwise, the pitch will be called a “ball”.
    f. Intentional walks may simply be declared after the umpire has begun play (free pass). COED: If a batter is intentionally walked to reach a female batter (umpire’s discretion), then the next batter shall have the choice to bat or take 1st base.
  4. Base Running:
    a. At no time will a base runner be permitted to “run through” a fielder. A runner
must avoid within limits (3-feet) or give him/herself up. Any undue force will result
in an out and could result in automatic ejection from the games as well as suspension.
    b. A base runner that illegally interferes with a fielder attempting to make a play will be called out. If it is an obvious attempt to prevent a double play and it occurs before the base runner is put out, the immediate succeeding base runner shall also be called out.
    c. The base runner must remain in contact with the base until the ball is hit or crosses the plate. Failure to do so will result in an out. There is no stealing.
    d. Courtesy runners are permitted for injured players once the batter has reached base. The courtesy runner will be designated as the last batter put out, the last inning.
  5. Batting:
    a. The batting order shall be entered on score-sheets and will be followed with the exception of substitutes, who may enter the game and bat in the spot for whomever they have replaced.
    b. Teams may bat the entire squad.
    c. Bats must be official softball bats of legal size, weight, and shape
    d. When attempting a swing, a batter who steps completely outside the batter’s box or onto home plate will be called out. The runners must return to their original bases.
    e. Bunting is illegal in slow pitch
  6. Fielding:
    a. A fake tag is an obstruction and results in automatic ejection for the fielder (umpire’s discretion). The base runner shall be awarded the base.
    b. On any obstruction by a fielder, play will continue and bases will be awarded, in the umpire’s judgment, to equal those that could have been reached had the fielder obstruction not occurred.
    c. Infield Fly Rule: When the batter hit’s a Routine pop fly with less than two outs, and there are runners on first and second base or the bases are loaded (force at 3rd bases), the batter is automatically out. The runners can try to advance but only after tagging up.

    • The team’s captain is held at all times responsible for his/her players’ actions and eligibility.
