Lindsay McCune Sweats the Details
For Lindsay McCune, life is all about the details.
“I’m a schedule freak,” the English literature major says. “My freshman year I had my schedule down to 15-minute increments. I’m just one of those people who wants to live an accelerated life.”
Lindsay’s perfectionism was also noticed in Newswriting I class, by a professor who also happened to be adviser to The Chimes student newspaper.
“I thought I was doing terribly in the class, but Professor Messinger asked if I would apply for a managing editor spot for the student newspaper,” she says. “Now I’ve been doing it for two years.”
Lindsay, a native of Barberton, Ohio, began to gain some practical experience, editing real estate research journals for a local company that has learned the value of calling Capital for help.
“The editing experience was great, and the position also taught me how to interact in an office setting,” she says. “The company is always looking to Capital because they know they can rely on our students’ skills and work ethic.”
Things really started to speed up in her next internship, with Bath & Body Works, the Columbus-based national chain.
“Nancy Smith, the assistant director of Capital’s Career Services Office, had dinner with a Bath & Body Works executive,” Lindsay says. “They had planned to call one of the big universities about the position, but Nancy urged them to look at Capital – and me – instead.”
She now works 12 hours a week as Bath & Body Works’ only editor.
“Labeling, packaging, store promotions, catalogs, the Internet: that’s me,” she says. “I’m a girly girl, and I get to see all the in-store promotions and try new products before they come out. It’s a dream job.”
She must be doing something right: Bath & Body Works has already invited Lindsay to join their staff full time after she graduates.
“I’ve gotten the opportunity to do all the cool stuff that I always thought I would,” she says, rolling her eyes in wonder. “I’m going to be a twenty-something with my hand on the actual consumer economy.”
And a twenty-something whose attention to detail has paid off.
