Faculty Bios 

Susan Blough, Ph.D., Professor of Education 

Academic Background: B.A. University of Wisconsin; M.A. in English Literature, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH; Ph.D. The Ohio State University - Counseling and School Psychology.

Teaching and Research Areas:  Teaching courses in working with exceptional children, behavior management for students with disabilities, diagnosis and teaching of students with mild to moderate disabilities.  Research and scholarship interests: autism spectrum disorders, particularly Asperger's Syndrome; emotional and behavioral disorders --- their relationship to poverty and to juvenile delinquency.  Interested in getting undergraduate education students involved in working in challenging urban environments --- tutoring in an after school program at an inner city school; tutoring at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center.


Erica Brownstein, Ph. D., Associate Professor, Science Education

Academic Background: B.A. in Chemistry, Ohio Dominican; Ph.D. in Science Education, The Ohio State University.

Teaching and Research Interests: Brownstein’s area of specialization is science education and has additional teaching and research experience in the integration of technology into the k-16 classroom. She regularly teaches Science Pedagogy, Science by Inquiry, and Developing as a Professional III.  Brownstein is dedicated to providing opportunities for learning. Her scholarship interests include technology integration, accreditation, and misconceptions. She also serves as the faculty advisor for GROWS, an outreach program for inner city middle school girls. 

 

Dr. Sally A. Creasap, Assistant Professor of Education

Academic Background: B.S. in Business Administration, Bowling Green State University; M.B.A., University of Dayton; A.A.S. in Early Childhood Technology, Clark State Community College; M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Leadership from The Ohio State University 

Teaching and Research Interests: Dr. Creasap regularly teaches Child Development, Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Learning Environments, and School, Community, and Culture at Capital University.  Her research interests include the importance of experiential learning, service-learning, portfolios, and reflective practice as tools for preparing teacher educators.   

 

Mr. Chuck Devor, Post Degree/Licensure Coordinator

Academic Background:  BA in Education, Ball State University; MA in Education, Ball State University; Education Specialist in Curriculum/Supervision, Wright State University 

Teaching and Research Interests:  Devor coordinates the nondegree teaching license program, reviews all teaching license applications, and teaches the foundations course.  He has prepared presentations for National Tech Prep Conference and Association of Teacher Educators national meetings as well as various state conferences, and has been published in the OCTELA Journal.  The nature of his work has shifted his interests from performance assessment and capstone projects at the K-12 level to accommodating adult learners. 

 

Shirley De Lucia, Ed.D, Professor of Education, Education Department Chair  

Academic Background: B.A. in Elementary Education, Iowa Wesleyan College; M.A. in Elementary Education, Duke University, Durham, NC; Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction,  Duke University, Durham, NC 

Teaching  and Research Areas:  Dr. De Lucia has taught pedagogy courses in mathematics, social studies and science at the elementary and middle/secondary levels, professional development courses, and graduate courses in educational psychology and science curriculum and instruction.  Supervision at sophomore, junior, and senior levels has also been important in her teaching and research areas.  She values going into schools and observing teacher education candidates become teachers.  Research interests have been in the areas of student teaching supervision, team teaching at the university level, and classroom management. 

 

Cheryl Conrad DoBroka, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education

Academic Background: B.A. and M.A. in English, The Ohio State University; Ph.D. in Educational Studies/English Education, The Ohio State University. 

Teaching and Research Interests: First-year students in Education encounter DoBroka’s student-centered approach to teaching and learning in the “Foundations of the Education Profession” course she has designed. Upper level students study and research with her for MCE and AYA Language Arts Pedagogy, Content Area Reading, and Senior Student Teaching Clinical. DoBroka’s research interests of Critical Thinking/Questioning and Emotional Intelligence, along with her cross-disciplinary work in Intercultural Competency, are integrated into each course she teaches and have been presented at national and international conferences. In addition, DoBroka oversees a community-based service learning program, “Kids of Character: Teaching Tolerance,” in which Capital pre-service teachers partner with Camp Fire USA in writing and delivering multicultural literacy curricula to inner city youth in after school programs. 

 

Tobie Sanders, Ph.D, Professor of Education

Academic Background: B.S. in Teaching, M.A. and Ph.D. in Education from The Ohio State University. 

Teaching and Research Areas: Dr. Sanders holds the Cotterman Endowed Chair in Education at Capital University and has been awarded the Praestancia Award for Excellence in Teaching and several Gerhold Awards for Faculty Development.   Dr. Sanders has conducted extensive funded research in language development and early childhood education. She has edited the Ohio Journal of English Language Arts (OJELA), published numerous articles and book chapters related to language development, early literacy, and diversity in early childhood education, and for seven years served as the chair of the teacher education program at Capital University. She serves as a consultant to the Ohio Department of Education in relation to Early Learning and Literacy Initiatives; serves on the Board of Franklin County Child Development Council; and teaches courses related to teaching reading and language arts, child development, language development and literacy.

Academic Background: B.S. in Elementary Education, Theatre Arts concentration College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Minnesota; M.A. and Ph.D. The Ohio State University
