How to Succeed at Capital

  • Go to class! Your academic success is very dependent on being in class everyday to get the information you need.

  • Buy the book and take the time to read assignments as listed on your syllabus.

  • You are responsible for your decisions and actions. You will have an incredible amount of freedom—USE IT WISELY! Always know and meet important dates and deadlines.

  • Know the University policies and procedures regarding plagiarism, academic integrity, smoking, property and more. Be aware of the consequences of violating university policies and procedures by reviewing the Capital University Student Code of Conduct.

  • Treat others with respect, this includes students, faculty and staff.

  • Set a goal for your grade point average (GPA) and decide how to meet that goal.

  • Know the names of all your professors and where their offices are located. Visit your professors often and get to know them. Personal time spent with faculty helps them to understand your commitment to learning, as well as the efforts you are making to balance academic and personal demands.

  • Visit with your academic adviser at least twice a semester. You also should explore major and career options with Career Services, located in the lower level of the Campus Center.

  • Find a quiet place on campus or at home to study. You should prepare to study two hours for every one hour of academic coursework. The Blackmore Library is a wonderful place to study in between classes.

  • Know where you can receive academic assistance: Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Peer Tutuors, study groups, your professors’ offices.

  • Writing well is time consuming. Get feedback on an early draft of a paper, then plan time to revise. Don’t wait until the last minute to have someone read over a paper before you’re ready to turn it in.

  • Develop a sense of belonging. Don’t just go to class. Join a student organization and make new friends. Student leadership in organizations is highly valued by employers and graduate schools. Always think about your future! The decisions you make today shape the opportunities available to you tomorrow.

  • Be prepared for stress. Use a planner to note important due dates for papers and exams. Planners are available in the Campus Bookstore. Seek ways to alleviate stress such as talking to a counselor or participating in a fun activity. Counseling Services are available via the Counseling and Assistance Program for Students at 337-7001.

  • Keep lines of communication open: Talk with parents, friends and professors. E-mail is a good way to communicate when you can’t find someone to talk to face-to-face.

  • Sleep is very important. Staying up until 3 a.m. could begin to take its toll with missed morning classes.

  • File your financial aid, scholarship application and FAFSA each and every year by March 1. Failure to file could cost you big dollars.

  • Learn to navigate the Capital University Web site and the current student portal.

Be prepared to work at balancing your academic and personal responsibilities!
