Capital University Overseas Study and Financial Aid Policy
Capital University views overseas study as an important element of a liberal education. In support of the overall educational mission of the institution, Capital University permits institutional aid (i.e. Capital University and departmental scholarships and grants) to be used towards the instructional cost of overseas study for one semester. Federal and state regulation permits the use of federal and states funds for any program related costs in which the university awards college level credit. There is no time limit for the use of federal or state funds, however, a consortium agreement between Capital University and the host institution may be required.
In using financial aid for study abroad, the following criteria must be met:
Students must enroll in a minimum of 12 semester hours each term. Credit earned cannot be "redundant" credit (the same course taken twice.) Students must complete and submit Worksheet #3 – Course Approval Form to the Office of International Education. Deadlines for the Course Approval Form are: November 1st for the spring semester and April 1st for the fall semester.
Students must research program costs to complete and submit Worksheet #4 – Budget Worksheet with copies of program costs from the sponsoring institution, to the director of Financial Aid. The student should schedule a meeting with the director to go over budget material. The Director of Financial Aid will sign the Course Approval Form.
A bill or an invoice for the program needs to be submitted to the Director of Student Accounts in the Finance Office.
If possible, please have all loan checks submitted electronically to the university.
Select a "Power-of-Attorney" who is someone who is not an employee of Capital University, but someone you trust to complete financial arrangements for you when you are out of the country. Here is a Sample Power of Attorney Form. Please give a copy of the Power-of-Attorney to the Director of Student Accounts in the Finance Office.
A final transcript from the overseas institution must be sent to the Capital University Registrar's Office at the completion of the overseas program.
- Tuition Remission or Tuition Exhcange recipients may not have their beneifit applied toward study abroad.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities for Study Abroad
The U.S. government believes it is important for citizens to be better educated about the world and is providing scholarship assistance to help college students engage in overseas study. Since Capital University limits the use of institution aid to the tuition costs of study abroad for one term, here are links to additional scholarship opportunities. Read the instructions carefully since some scholarships do have a service component associated with receiving a scholarship.
All of these scholarships are competitive with other students around the U.S. Some scholarships require a review and ranking by the university. This review is done by the International Education Committee of the Faculty Senate. To be the most competitive it is important to:
- Read instructions carefully and check the application deadlines
- Prepare a draft of your essay and have it reviewed by a faculty member, the Writing Center in CELT or a study abroad advisor in the Office of International Education
