William Walton’s Masterwork, Belshazzar’s Feast, will be performed Sunday, April 26 at 7:30 pm by the combined Capital University Conservatory of Music choral and instrumental forces. Featured will be faculty voice professor Mark Baker (Opera Columbus) as baritone soloist, Chapel Choir, Choral Union, Womens Chorus, Chordsmen, Capital University/Bexley Community Orchestra (prepared by Maestro Nicholas J. Perrini), plus two independent brass choirs, all under the direction of Dr. Lynda Hasseler, Director of Choral Activities.
The oratorio was written 1930-31 and is based on biblical passages from the Book of Daniel, Book of Revelation, and Psalms 81 and 137. The story tells of a feast at which the Babylonian king, Belshazzar, orders sacred Jewish vessels be used to praise heathen gods, but mysterious writing appears on the walls. Following the feast the king is slain, the kingdom is divided, and the Jews are freed from their exile in Babylon.
Belshazzar’s Feast is a perennial favorite of the English choral repertoire and one of Walton’s best known compositions. The work is known for its syncopated rhythms, rich jazz-influenced harmonies, and outstanding orchestration.
