Education Major

A biology 115 class using laptops.

Tiffanie, an early childhood education major, is shown here in Biology 115, Science by Inquiry. Bio 115 is a typical class for early and middle childhood education majors. Dr. Erica Brownstein, just visible in the far right, leads the class through investigations in how things work. Occasionally this means tearing apart small appliances or simply working through computer programs.

Education

The joy of seeing kids' faces light up with understanding. The challenge of keeping them motivated, day after day. Teaching isn't just a job…it's a calling. And it carries rewards that can't be easily measured.

For today's young teachers, the future looks bright. According to the National Education Association, more than a million veteran teachers nationwide are approaching retirement age. At the same time, student enrollment is growing by leaps and bounds. Experts predict that, over the next decade, the U.S. will need more than 2 million new teachers.

With an education major from Capital, you'll be highly qualified, classroom-experienced and ready to make your mark as a teacher as soon as you graduate.

On-Campus Learning

As a student in the education department, you'll enjoy:

  • Small classes (average class size: 15) that facilitate interaction with professors and classmates
  • The caring, personal attention from professors that enables you to reach your full potential

With all the teaching specialties Capital offers, there's no such thing as a "typical" teacher education candidate.

Off-Campus Teaching Experiences

Teaching is a hands-on profession. The more time you spend teaching in real classrooms before you graduate, the better you'll be able to manage a classroom of your own. At Capital, you can get as many as three field-based teaching experiences starting as early as your sophomore year. And thanks to Capital's central location, you can choose urban, suburban or rural schools—even local and state agencies. Whatever kind of teacher you want to be, and whatever kind of setting you eventually want to work in, we'll make sure you're ahead of the curve.

For extra experience, you can also opt to do a full-year teaching internship. This can really help when the time comes to look for a teaching position. Through this program, you can:

  • Gain additional student teaching experience that will set your resume apart
  • Learn what it's like to teach full-time for an entire school year
  • Earn a full year of credit toward teacher retirement
  • Take home a modest stipend
