  20. National Center for Adoption Law, Policy Has New Leadership Following Appointment of Kent Markus as Chief Counsel to Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland

    Denise St. Clair and Angela Upchurch have been named executive director and academic director, respectively, of the National Center for Adoption Law and Policy (NCALP) at Capital University Law School. The appointments came following law professor and the center’s founding director Kent Markus’ announcement that he would take a leave of absence to serve as chief legal counsel for Gov. Ted Strickland.

  21. Schumacher Gallery To Unveil Recently Donated African Art Collection Friday, Jan. 12

    The Schumacher Gallery will unveil selected pieces of African art gathered over decades of travel and collecting by central Ohio residents Donald Schreiber and Bonnie Fox during the gallery’s January exhibition, which opens today. The 502-piece Schreiber-Fox Collection of African Art has been donated to The Schumacher Gallery and will be added to its permanent collection at the close of the exhibition.

  24. Capital University’s 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning To Feature Scholar-Activist Carlos Muñoz Jr. Jan. 15

    Capital University will present its 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Learning on Monday, Jan. 15. The daylong event will begin at 8:15 a.m. with a community gathering in Stegemoeller Room, followed at 8:45 a.m. by a procession through campus to Mees Hall for convocation, which will begin at 9 a.m. The keynote speaker for this year’s celebration of King’s life and legacy is Carlos Muñoz Jr., who will speak on “The Challenge for Multiracial Democracy in America.”

  25. Capital University Holds Winter 2006 Commencement

    When Katherine Clawson walked the stage of Capital University’s Mees Hall Saturday to receive her bachelor’s degree in criminology, she reflected on the mutual respect that buffered exchanges of opposing views between her and her fellow students. She walked by the faculty members who were unbending in their insistence that she meet their academic challenges, yet showed almost parent-like concern that she successfully complete her degree. Even if most of them were young enough to be her children. But mostly, she prided herself that, even as a 75-year-old retired owner of a title agency and founder of a nonprofit organization that built the retirement community she now lives in, she had a lot to learn; and she learned it. She’s got the honors cords to prove it.

  26. Student Employee Pay Scale Adjusted to Reflect Minimum Wage Change

    Beginning Jan. 1, 2007, the minimum-wage increase approved in November by Ohio voters will take effect, making it necessary for the university to adjust its compensation structure for student employees.

  27. Capital University Professors Lead NSF-Funded Project To Strengthen Teaching of Computational Studies to Undergraduates

    Two Capital University professors will lead 35 of their peers in a four-year effort to create and distribute educational materials and to train faculty how to teach computational studies to undergraduate students. Funded by a $480,000 National Science Foundation grant, select faculty members from 14 colleges and universities will combine their expertise to develop educational materials to teach computational studies, which currently is taught almost exclusively at the master’s level, to students at two- and four-year colleges.
