Tishia Richardson Well, it's 2008 and this time next year I'll be in my last semester as a Capital University Social Work student. Wow...time sure does fly by when you're having fun! Granted, I'm graduating in three years, but it barely seems like yesterday that I stepped onto campus for the very first time. That anxiety that I felt as I took those first long journeys up to the 3rd floor of SS residence hall seems to resonate as I think about leaving Capital and entering "the real world" or graduate school or who knows...See what I mean?
There are so many decisions to make and I'm the type of person that likes to have everything mapped out. But you'll learn, if you haven't already, that you just have to go with the flow and everything will work out. So for now, I'm juggling the idea of graduate school and trying to make an informed decision by looking at several possibilites. We'll see where it takes me.
Other than my constant thoughts of "What will I be doing a year and a half from now?", I've been very busy! I'm taking 18 credit hours, which is 5 classes. I have:
Human Behavior in the Social Environment II
Social Policy
Social Science Publication
Humanities
Creative Writing
All of my classes seem to be off to a good start. My social science publication is an independent study and I'm really excited about it. We're working on a possible article for publication about children and ADHD in the school setting. It's going to be awesome. I am so grateful for the opportunity. Creative Writing is going very well. Honestly, I worried that I would be forced to share a lot of my work but my professor is really nice and makes it a very comfortable environment. She is very enthusiastic about her passion - writing - and seems to want to share it with the world. That's what I love about professors at Capital, that's just how most of them are. I went to Schumacher Art Gallery, which is the one right here on campus, for my Humanities class. I hate to admit it, but I had never been before. I'm sure I'll be going back becasue it was really interesting. They have a temporary exhibit right now of self taught artists which was amazing and I saw a Salvador Dali that I loved. I'll post some pictures on here so everyone can see more.
Hmm...what else? Oh, Student Social Work Association is in full swing - we have such a busy semester ahead of us. March is Social Work Month so we'll be doing alot of cool stuff for that and Hunger Awareness Week will be coming up so we will be busy, busy! I'll be sure to update everyone about this later.
Also, social work majors must do a field placement at a local agency their senior year, so I've been looking into some options. There are so many options in Columbus; it's basically a great place to find whatever it is that you're looking for and this is definitely something to keep in mind when choosing a school. A good internship is so critical, no matter what major you are. Also, hopefully I will soon start working at a Suicide Hotline, which is going to be awesome experience and suicide prevention is something I am very interested in. One of my friends and I are also looking into doing a teen pregnancy prevention program with middle schoolers which should be lots of fun and really educational, not only for the kids, but for us as well, as prevention can be such a big part of social work at times.
Okay, that's it for now. If anyone has any questions feel free to comment or email me at trichard@capital.edu.
Adios!
