What A Week!

First of all I should start out by introducing myself. I'm Kelsey. I'm a music education-instrumental major here at Capital. Right now I'm sitting in my hometown of Avon after a busy week and half. And if at any time after reading this or any of my blogs that will come later you have anything you'd like to say to me or ask me e-mail me, kkantura@capital.edu.

I hadn't originally intended to come home the first weekend after classes started, but my uncle got married earlier today so I made the long drive home last night, making sure of course to be home in time for some friday night high school football!

But that's not the important stuff. The important stuff is the my first week and half at Capital!

I moved down on August 23rd. I left home with my car all loaded up at about seven in the morning. I got to Cap at about ten and then made the trip up and down three flights of stairs way too many times as I got all of my stuff into my dorm. After I had moved all of my stuff in I just sat down on my bed and took it in... 'I'm in college. I'm finally here.' After that I went down to the student center and couldn't get my mailbox open. One of the ladies who works in the post office helped me and I got my ID and then I think after that was lunch.

The 23rd was the 'Conservatory Transitions' so only the freshman entering into the Conservatory of Music arrived. We met some our professors and were told all about the very hectic schedules we should plan to have for the next four years.

On the 24th the rest of the freshman moved in. It was a little more hectic than the 23rd because there were so many more people moving in. I finally got to meet my roommate. The 24th and 25th showed just a glimpse into how different it is for the conservatory students in comparison to the rest of the university. The majority of the freshman spent those two days enjoying the orientation activities that the OLs had set up, meanwhile the conservatory kids had orientation for a few of our really important classes in the conservatory, like musicianship and music lit and got ready for our big auditions on Saturday the 26th.

My audition didn't go so well on Saturday (granted, I say that about every audition I ever have for anything). But I had fun Saturday night when we went to Easton as part of the orientation activities. I had never been to Easton and oh my gosh!! It's the biggest mall I've ever seen in my life! I've never seen anywhere like Gameworks. And it's close to Cap. Like, maybe 15 minutes away.

Sunday I went on my 'Columbus Excursion' to COSI. I had fun there, and then Monday class started. My schedule on Mondays are pretty boring. One class at nine and one class at three, but it's nice to have that break in between. Make sure and get practice time in there.

Monday was also one my new Cap friends' birthday. So we went back to Easton because he wanted to get his ear pierced. So we went and did that and then got a celebratory dinner of Chipotle. After that we got lost coming back home, why? Well... I'm gonna go right ahead and blame Andy. Andy got us lost. Ha ha ha. It was fun though.

Tuesday was a little more hectic in terms of classes. I have class from eight until three. Wednesday has the same class schedule as Monday, and I also found out my chair position. (not what I had hoped it would be but, I can only blame myself for that).  Thursday is going to be my least favorite day of the week. I have class from eight until three and then again at five. But I like all of my classes. So I can't complain too much. Friday has the same schedule as Monday and Wednesday except I also have a conservatory class called 'recital hour.' Recital hour is, well, it's an hour where all ever student in the conservatory will play before the end of the year.

After my keyboarding quiz I went and got my laundry and headed back here to Avon. Friday night I went to the football game, the Eagles lost 20-28, but I didn't mind too much because the real reason I went, the marching band, was AMAZING!! Then today was my uncle Paul's wedding. And tomorrow, I'm heading back home. Well, my new home.

I've only spent less than two weeks there, but I can already tell I'm really really going to like Capital!

The teaching here is great! The classes are small and you get to know your proffessors on a very personal level. They know your name, they talk to you in the hall and they're always available and willing to help!
We have a few international students that I know of and I think it would deffinetly be worth it!
I'm sorry it took so long for me to respond to you!

I am interested in music education and play trombone. What can you tell me about the trombone professor. How many students major in music ed and what are your favorite ensembles?

    Hello Alex,
The trombone professor's name is Dr.Zugger. His e-mail address is tzugger@capital.edu. Because i play flute, I haven't really spoken with him. But I'm sure that he, along with any other conservatory faculty members would be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Here is a link to his site within the Capital page : http://www.capital.edu/internet/default.aspx?pid=4339

In regards to how many students major in Music Education, I was rather surprised by how many students major in music education. I'm guessing you would want to major in instrumental. And from what I've experienced, a little more than half of the music education majors here at Capital are instrumental. Don't let that scare you into thinking there are too many of us or something, all that having that many instrumental music majors does is show what a great school Capital is for not just music education, but for music in general.

As a freshman music ed major, I have a very very busy schedule and the only ensembles that I have chosen to be a member of this semester are Wind Symphony and flute choir. Capital has many MANY other ensembles including, jazz combos, Big Band, each studio has an instrument choir,.. here is a link to a full listing of Capital's ensembles:
    http://www.capital.edu/internet/default.aspx?pid=239.

I personally am really enjoying Wind Symphony. It is a large step, a leap rather, up from the level of my high school band. From the literature that we play and the talent of the musicians in the group.

I hope that I helped answer your questions. And I appologize for the delay in my response.
